That's because q lot of rescues are crazy. Dogs and children can be great together. Dogs and babies or toddlers can be great together, with a little sense and supervision. |
What’s the other parts? If it is lab, they weren’t “lying.” Don’t get rid of your dog based on fear-mongering. Plenty of people have staffy mixes. If you love the dog and it has a nice personality, etc. enjoy it. Shelters in most cases can only guess. Pit mixes are so prevalent in shelters it’s a good guess any mix has some type of pit in it. Imagine how many dogs have homes that are lovely pets that you don’t hear about because there is nothing to hear. |
Sure they can. They also cannot. Especially when parents leave them unattended and when parents don't teach their kids to respect the dog's space. I, myself, was bitten (through the flesh) on my face as a child. By a small, not tiny, breed that is always fawned over on this board. I was in her face when she was hot, sleeping, and wanted to be alone. She bit me. |
I had an aggressive dog, a husky, he actually was in a fight with a pit who wouldn't let go but he won. Both were sent to he quarantined or what is jailtime for them. My husky was powerful and strong but thankfully he never attacked like a pit would. The pit was known well by animal control. Its a wonder why he hadn't been put down already. |
Agree. Our relatives used to have this tiny poodle mix who was a calm, if not overly friendly, dog. But when it got old, it began to go blind and as its eyesight went downhill, it became very aggressive when startled. Not the poor dog's fault probably, but not compatible with babies and toddlers either. Our relatives are empty nesters, so it was fine for them. |
This is what happened with our neighbor's chocolate lab. Super friendly dog, had always been great with our kids (neighbor's kids were grown, but had been young while the dog was a puppy, so it was really used to kids). Then one day we saw them out for a walk, my 2yo wanted to pet the dog, so we walked over and asked, just like always. The kid held his hand out for sniffing and all that. But while he was standing next to the dog, it heard another dog bark across the street, and it lunged and snapped in that general direction - which happened to be where my 2yo was standing. It had been a few weeks since we'd seen them, and just hadn't realized how bad his eyesight had gotten. I 100% believe my neighbors when they said that was the first and only time they ever saw the dog act the slightest bit aggressive. Here's the difference, though: the lab snapped once and then pulled back. I'm not going to say it wasn't traumatic; it was. It took 10+ stitches at the ER to sew my kid's cheek and lip back together. That sucked. But 10 years later, there's just a very slight scar on his lip. If he had been standing in the wrong place at the wrong time next to a pit instead of a lab, I doubt he'd have gotten off so easily. Engineers talk about risk in terms of 'probability' and 'consequence' of an event - how likely is it to happen; and if it does, how bad will it be? It takes both angles to decide how dangerous something is. Other breeds may be just as likely to bite, but the consequences will generally be a lot worse if it's a pit or similar. |

I think it was a huge mistake to pass laws banning dogs from being adopted at pet shops and making it difficult for breeders. There could have been better regulations imposed than a ban. The result is irresponsible pet owners breed aggressive dogs like pit bulls or don’t bother getting them fixed. So now in shelters there are a ridiculous amount of pit or pit mixes. Families are desperate for dogs because the supply of family friendly dog breeds have been limited. I don’t understand why pit and pit mixes aren’t put down in shelters.
We tried to adopt from a shelter and they were full of pit and pit mixes labeled lab mix so they seem more desirable. We went to a breeder and got a family friendly dog breed instead. |

Are you seriously comparing a dog who got aggressive due to old age and the pain that accompanies that to an aggressive pit mix that killed a baby? Just wow. The cranky older dog may snap but that’s very different from mauling. Duration of the bite if one bite as well as number of bites |

It is not even the end of March, and pitbulls have killed at 4 innocent children.

The family owned the dog for 1 week. https://kdvr.com/news/local/dog-euthanized-after-biting-5-year-old-in-aurora/ This man was attacked by his friend's pittbulls last year, and is still dealing with medical complications. https://www.baynews9.com/fl/tampa/news/2020/07/18/pasco-county-woman-recalls-horror-of-pitbull-attacking-her--boyfriend# This "service" pitt bull bit a child in the face, in a restaurant. https://abc7.com/toddler-dog-attack-girl-bitten-by-that-bit-now-in-custody-bites-at-restaurant-old-town-spring/10042002/ This is only March, and these examples are not close to all of the incidents that have taken place so far this year. If car seats or cars were malfunctioning at this rate, people would demand for them to be taken off the roads and fixed. If this many children were killed in a particular bassinet or crib, people wouldn't defend the product! They would demand it be recalled and taken off the market. The problem with pittbulls, is even if you choose not to own one, your neighbor's pittbull can attack your child. A stray pit bull can attack your child. These dogs are not safe, and are often zero mistake animals. If my dog accidentally gets out of my house, she is going to run around like a fool until I catch her and bring her home. Nothing a random child is going to do is going to "trigger" or "scare" her enough to hurt them if she would happen to get loose. She is not going to be so "scared" or reactive of a kid walking near her food bowl, or ball, or rope, or her bed, that she is going to kill someone. Shelters need to be willing to euthanize these dangerous animals, and not place them in households, once they make it into the shelter. So many of these dogs are "nice", until they turn on the family that brings them home. |
| This is so disgusting. We need to have mandatory spaying/neutering on pits and pit mixes. My neighbors had one and they got around the ban by having their vet certify that their dog was a "pug mix". I've never seen pugs that were 50lbs and huge. The dog ended up attacking another dog in our hallway. |
what makes YOUR aggressive dog better? Aggressive is aggressive. You seem weirdly proud that you dog won a dog fight. |

DP. No, dog aggressive is dog aggressive, not people aggressive. Dogs can tell dogs apart from people, they're smart enough for that. They can also tell people apart from squirrels or bunnies, too. |
Besides the obvious damage that they can do to people, I also really hate this about the breed. Ok, so it's good in the home. What is it like with other dogs? I had a neighbor who rescued pits and several of them attacked neighborhood dogs, including my own on more than one occasion. An unleashed pit bull running at you at full speed is terrifying and trying to pull one off your dog even worse. One of them attacked my dog and it was so awful multiple neighbors called the police to report a dog fight. My dog only made it out because he was 95 lbs so had a shot at fighting for his life. The same dog went on to kill a small terrier before being put down. Screw that, who wants a dog that can't play nicely with other dogs? I keep my current dog far away from them on walks. |
