worst engagement ring trends

I don’t like rose gold, halos, or really large center stones. This is just my personal taste, though.

Sing it sistah. Diamonds are super boring. I love my large-ish sapphire because it is objectively gorgeous. If I had a diamond solitaire presented to me, yeah, i would have thrown it into a safe deposit box to depreciate every year in value. I wear my sapphire on my right hand and a band on my left.

Funny. Me too. I look at them and sometimes feel ill, knowing what I know about my friends' marriages. I think they are ugly and sort of tacky in today's world.

When I got engaged, I chose a sapphire ring, the sapphire is round and about 3 cts , with diamond pave cathedral setting. I never wear it. its sticks out, gets in the way, etc.

But I like wearing something on my hand and for ages have worn a plain band until I lost it recently in the ocean--it had gotten loose after I lost weight. so for my bday, I decided to have a ring made by a jeweler I found on etsy. It looks a little like delicate tree branches wrapping around and there is a small bezel set diamond in it that I'm putting in my from an heirloom piece....but it lies flat and looks nothing like the usual big rock engagement ring. Can't wait for it to come.

also, Dh wears the 20$ titanium ring I bought him--its what he wanted and we bought 2 in case he lost one.

I had a diamond engagement ring, but it kept flipping around my finger and cutting my kids when I picked them up, so for our 10th anniversary, I asked for an eternity ring - which I absolutely love.

I got one too. And rebuilt my engagement ring after my husband's affair (which is a different story). I used to ALWAYS wear the wedding band and engagement ring. Then I stopped the engagement ring. Then we rebuilt, and got the eternity ring. I wear the full set if I'm dressed up. The rest of the time, its the wedding band or the eternity ring.

I hate the teardrop shaped stones, regardless of stone type. My favorite part of the engagement ring is that it is a symbol of who you were then as a couple. Finances, kids, life happen....and that is the bedrock (or pearl, or band, or tattoo or whatever). So, my most hated trend is "upgrading" from whatever you started with. Add on...ok. But never replace.

I hate the trend when older, long-married women are petty and jealous enough to find fault with engagement rings of younger brides.

+1. Rose gold is timeless. Curious how many posters here either hate their ring or never got one and find it satisfying to “look down” on those who love their rings. My DH loved picking out my engagement ring and wears his wedding band all the time and no we don’t have to deal with APs either.

They are a fabrication by DeBeers to sell overpriced stones. Just stupid and a total waste of money. At least just get a synthetic stone and don't throw your money down the drain.

Engagement rings have been around for centuries. They are not a trend.

I wish I didn't even get one. I only wear a thin channel set band.

I got engaged in 2006 and had family stones reset in rose gold. I like that it’s trending now because I used to have to get jewelry custom made or pay a premium.

Halos are overdone, but really any generic catalogue solitaire bores me to tears. I know not everyone values uniqueness, but I couldn’t imagine wearing jewelry every day that doesn’t tell a story about me. To each her own, though.

I love my rose gold + emerald ring. Rose gold is great.

This thread is insufferable. Grown women trampling over each other to be the first to reply "I don't even like engagement rings!!!"

But what if you really don’t like engagement rings? Why is that such an offensive opinion. I’d never tell a woman with a ring “I hate how your ring looks and what it stands for.” But I do. Not trying to hurt anyone’s feelings, it’s just what I actually think.

I agree. I’ve been married almost 14 years. When the subject of an upgrade came up, I felt icky about it. Like getting an upgrade says the first ring wasn’t good enough. I’ve worn it everyday since our engagement. It’s been on my hand for everything we have gone through together. I can’t just toss it aside.
