For those who’ve “checked out” of public virtual school

Public is offering online schooling. It just requires parent participation.

But, what public schools are offering is really lacking in quality. Why should we pay teachers when we can get a better online product from Khan for free?

Defund the schools.

Teachers are limited by MCPS on how and what they can teach. Stop blaming MCPS. Parents had a fit so now the curriculum and expectations are so low that if you child isn't passing and doesn't have SN there is another issue.

As of Feb. 1st they are offering free tutoring in all subjects online on top of the homework hotline. What more do you want them to do?

Let the kids go back to school at least 2x per week and go up incrementally from there so that we're hopefully back 5 days per week. It's really that simple. We're just asking the teachers and schools to educate the kids in their classrooms where actual learning can happen. If they cannot do that, give us our money back and we'll take the kids elsewhere.

As somebody who both loves the concept of universal public education (and yes I am lucky in that my kids are doing great with distance learning even though I mean toward schools reopening) and who has been a huge fan of Khan Academy for over a decade, this thread bums be out. It seems like the divide we have created based on our opinions of distance learning are branching out into other divides. That’s not necessary. We just do the best with what we can, keeping in mind what all of society needs to progress.

Everybody should check out this TED talk by the founder of Khan Academy. Its so inspiring. I watched it almost ten years ago but I keep catching myself thinking about parts of it.

We've tried a few things for kindergarten level supplementing. I thought for this level that ABCMouse was a lot better than Khan academy (Khan seemed to be mostly watch a video, answer questions, whereas ABCMouse had a lot of different types of games to reinforce content.)

That said, our current favorite for math in the K-2 range is Todo Math. It does require a subscription, but the games are fantastic and are clearly teaching a lot of intuitive math skills.

Giant whatever

Do you even have kids? Why would you troll this when it’s meant to help other families struggling with DL? Lame.

It’s an ad lol! Go look at all the ad copy. Sites like Khan make tons of $$$ from traffic. This is driving traffic there. It’s not just some mom helping you, she’s selling it.

It’s not an ad, but even if it was, literally everybody should use Khan Academy. My kid’s excellent math teacher (at HB Woodlawn, for what it’s worth), uses it to supplement her lessons. My son used it when he was little and was curious about subtraction. I have used it to refresh my math knowledge. It is really fun and a totally free-to-us resource (subsidized by bill and milenda gates, Elon musk, Google, etc).

If you think this is an ad, fine, but I hope that doesn’t stop you from letting your kids use the website (the app is good too but leaves a bit to be desired). They would love it.

It’s almost like some people want to keep the education for those privileged enough to afford it while keeping the rest of us down. Khan is free and a fantastic educational service. I wish I’d know about it years ago.

Claiming OP is an ad is so stupid that it must be someone who is deeply invested in hiding just how appalling public education has been this year.
