For those who’ve “checked out” of public virtual school

My kids have used Khan academy during the summer to keep their math skills up. I love, love, love it. The lessons are great and my kids always feel confident going into the next school year. My HS DC has also used it to prep before starting an AP class. It’s a wonderful site and a great organization that is on our yearly donation list.

I am now homeschooling our youngest due to the pains of DL and I use it in combination with two other curriculums as well.

Do you even have kids? Why would you troll this when it’s meant to help other families struggling with DL? Lame.

That’s awesome. I wish I had started using it with my oldest a long time ago.

Of course I have kids. Seems like a giant ad. My kids would MUCH rather see friends and teacher even if over zoom. Today my 1st grader came home talking about a book Kamala Harris’s sister wrote about her. I prefer socialization and relevant learning even if virtual.

We’ve homeschooled this year and have no plans to return to public school. She’s simply learning more at home, even compared to non-Covid times. We supplement our math lessons with Khan, and it’s fantastic.

I think we are approaching the time when homeschooled kids and kids that are in top privates are going to be at a huge advantage over those in public schools (even the “good” ones).

Socialization isn’t just video-chatting with 30 people born the same year as you. As an adult, I’ve never been forced into an age group like that for work/school/whatever. It’s pretty strange if you think about it. Assembly line education producing a mediocre product at best.

Its amazing how much faster kids can learn with online resources other than the silly penguin or a parent who is engaged in their education. There's tons of free online tutoring too.

I agree, the gap is just going to grow even more.

Well it’s not and you are more than welcome to do what works best for your family but it’s pretty lame that you would discredit something that works for others. Pouring salt in my sugar won’t make yours any sweeter. Bless your heart.

I agree.

I am cackling about the people saying this is an ad for Kahn academy. Sure, Khan might have the backing of Bill Gates, but let’s have somebody pretend to be a parent fed up with distance learning and put a plug for us on a random message board. Totally worth the trouble.

Khan is free and it is terrific!

For older kids, the best free SAT practice available!

This has been the best thing for my kids. I felt hopeless, helpless and defeated until I checked it out. Now my kids do self-paced lessons and quizzes in all subjects. It is efficient and they are learning considerably more, during hours less time, than they had been since virtual started last spring. Our days are so much better now. I feel relieved that they’re staying on track during this time and even catching up from lost learning. I can monitor their progress and it’s FREE!!
I just wanted to share because I know I’m not the only one who was filled with anxiety about this and it truly has been a load off since we started doing it.
Oh and we are not doing the public school day any longer. No more frustrations and zombie mode.

Glad that's working for you, but my kid hates it even more than DL. We've had some luck with Outschool, though.

It MUST be an ad because DL is working just find for my little ones, sweetie, and I refuse to think otherwise or see outside my own narrow perspective. Mmmkay. Tell Bill Gates to take his plug elsewhere we see right through it.

I agree -- I use Khan Academy as a parent to help solidify instruction ... and sometimes to help me remember things myself! I use it most often for Math, but they have many other subjects covered as well.
