Can you rank the following local ski places?

We have a cabin in Canaan Valley so we stay overnight. You could do a day trip from DC, but it is a long day. Not the easiest of drives.

Check out the Canaan Valley Resort and Billie Motel for short-term rentals. There is limited lodging out there. Certainly a downside. There are a lot of places on Airbnb and VRBO. If you can go Sunday-Tuesday, it is easier. Saturdays are busy but every resort is so not much you can do there.

That makes sense. I was at WISP this week. One day the East Ridge trails were open, which is great as I love Main Street, but the next day they were closed again and the North Camp trails were open.

Conditions were generally really good except one of the mornings when they had some freezing rain and the whole place was like an ice risk, but it was much better almost as soon as the sun came out.

I’d love to sky Timberline but I have had no luck finding lodging through VBRO or Airbnb

This winter was our first time skiing locally to DC. We went to Massanutten on New Years Eve. The mountain wasn't open completely, but it was fine enough for our family. A very do-able day trip.
The snow wasn't great then, but I'm thinking about going back this weekend. I'm scared to try other places because of the stories about long lines etc.

Is Massanutten the best option for a day trip (from Arlington) or are there better options?
This is for a day trip. We don't want to do PA.
It seems like it's a bit less popular, and therefore a bit off the radar. (And it's not Epic Pass--is that why some of the PA places are packed?)
Our family is intermediate and just happy to be out on the snow (so not too picky). No rental needed.

The majority of people day trip to PA because liberty and whitetail are bigger than massanutten and closer. Only 1:20-1:30 instead I’ve over 2 hrs. Being part of epic probably also plays a role because you can get an unlimited pass.

If you enjoyed massanutten then go there. I’m sure it’s a lot less crowded.

Whitetail is 10 minutes farther than Liberty. We've been to Liberty but never to Whitetail.

Worth the ten extra minutes? We don't care about terrain parks. Adults are experienced. Kids have been on skis 10+ days.

We need rentals for the kids. We're thinking about going midweek sometime.

Thanks.

Whitetail has more challenging greens and blues in my opinion.

We’ve had really fun weekends at Jack Frost/Big Boulder with kids that age. I would not have picked it over Snowshoe, Seven Springs, or Wisp other than the fact that it was on our pass but I ended up really liking it. Good terrain parks and nice section of easy blacks that almost nobody was on (even my 8 year old newish skier could get down them fine) made it a really fun family mountain. When we got bored we headed to Big Boulder. Might be worth checking out if if other mountains are full up.

There it is, there it is. Karen voices her opinion once again.

The pandemic is raging. The economy is suffering. So are peoples' spirits.

It would be nice if PP would learn about how the virus is spread (it's been a year, after all), and see how positive skiing is right now. It's easy to do safely.

+1. I agree and DS started learning there last year.

Exactly. I don’t even know why PP even clicks on the travel section. What just to say above? Really??

For me it's the same distance but even if it were 10 minutes farther I'd still choose Whitetail because it has more runs and they are longer/higher elevation.
