Yes, it is for real according to the principal's newsletter that went out today. How is 1 teacher coming back acceptable? |
It's surprising it was approved. If 50% of parents of responded they wanted in person learning and the final plan is 3% for learning with a teacher (10 kinder kids/330 total enrollment) you should be pissed because it has been presented as 20% of students being served when in reality almost all of them are going to be baby sat. The justification in the community email is condescending. |
She is getting to that percentage by using the CARES class. ELL/SPED teachers are certified live teachers and will be coming in for the afternoons. Remember Hearst already does cohorts, the kids don’t get instruction with their teacher the entire day right now (they only get 3 hours either am or pm) for grades pre-K-5. So the kids in the cares rooms are actually getting more instruction than the virtual kids. Either way....it’s still some realllll shady math. |
| So is Janney bringing back all Pkers for half days? |
| Are CARES classrooms in person learning? It's just overseen virtual learning. I was not aware that could be counted as in person learning. |
Fair or unfair, the Cares classrooms count as in person. So, the Hearst plan technically adheres to the DCPS guidelines for reopening, hence getting approved. |
Won't in person learning be the same as CARES? Yes the teacher will actually be in the room with students but they'll still be teaching from a computer at their desk. At least from the model I saw. |
Not at Hearst. It’s babysitting. Kids are still in their virtual classes but are sitting in a CARES classroom. So kids are next to each other but learning virtually on their laptops different things. Not sure how it is at other schools. This is criminal. The Hearst principal, DCPS and any parent group that approved this without floating it to the rest of us parents should resign their spots. Why even bother polling the parents if you aren’t going to make any attempt at doing the right thing. And the teachers, don’t even get me started. Get back in the classroom already and do the right thing. Which ever PP above used the word “farce” Is 100% right. The Hearst plan is a joke. |
| As a parent, I find some of these comments disturbing. You are starting to sound like an angry crazy mob. You do know there is a pandemic? You do know teachers will be able to get the first dose of the vaccine beginning Jan 25? I know it's been tough, I have 2 kids at home with me, but surely we can wait until term 4, when numbers will be lower and teachers will have been vaccinated.Just makes more sense. |
| I think the point is that if you look at other schools’ plans, they have teachers returning and students returning. At Hearst, that is clearly not happening. Parents are allowed to be angry. Especially when tricks are being used to get the numbers to look higher. We all know Term 4 will arrive and our Owls still won’t be back in school. But sure, we can continue to believe that three hours of teaching four days a week is a legitimate education. |
Try 1.5 hours of teaching at our charter which also isn’t reopening. |
| Which charters have declared that they aren't re-opening? |
I think it’s also an equity issue. There are DCPS schools across the city that are reopening with similar demographics to Hearst. Why do those students get in-person while others do not? I assumed this would happen when DCPS allowed schools to make their own plans. |
What makes you think that DCPS elementary schools will reopen for Term 4? Because the WTU and the City Council are on board with the plan? Hint: they aren't. |
So is a February 1 reopening guaranteed? |
