Individual School Plans?

NO PK classes should open. The spots need to go to k-3

That wouldn’t change the number for K-3. It’s not like the teachers willing to go in from Pre-K will just become first grade teachers

Depends on whether the first grade teachers staying virtual would have been willing to go in if the classrooms were freed up.
Or they could use partner/co teachers like they are in other grades.

Why are they offering half days when other DCPS schools are offering full-day in-person? I guess my question is how that is justified.

Very much disagree. If you have to choose between PK and 3rd for in-person, I think PK is the obvious choice. I know people get upset about this because it's not a mandatory grade, but I think that's the wrong way to look at it. The question is: among enrolled students, who is better served by DL, PK students or 3rd? The answer is clearly 3rd.

Granted, I think they should be bringing back PK-5 however they can, so it's not like I don't think 3rd should be there. I just think if you have to choose, PK makes more sense than an older grade because DL for PK is the dumbest thing ever, possibly worse than nothing at all.

So they can offer more in person learning hours to more kids. They say they can’t bring more kids back due to space/social
Distancing / CDC guidelines.

Agree in general except let’s be real. PK kids at Janney will be fine without having done PK. They will catch up. (I agree for low income kids, PK is important).
3rd grade is important, it’s a big leap from 2nd.

Our school (Key) informed us they're still waiting on response --approval or not--to their plan.

Why is it more "real" that kids need to be in person in 3rd over PK? Because you have a 3rd grader? I have a 4th grader and I think that the lift from 3rd to 4th is bigger than 2nd to 3rd because of the increase in academics. But.... I actually think PK is more important (for the kids and for the caregivers).

Nope, I do not have a 3rd grader, but I do have an older ES kid and a younger kid (not PK kid but who did PK). PK is optional and mostly about socialization. Third grade is when the academics start to get real.

I am concerned for the older kids for whom there is not a peep being said about the harm that DL is doing (HS and MS) and no plans for them to return anytime soon. And yes, I think that’s possibly more significant than a bunch of high-SES 4 year olds doing PK. (Since apparently we have to choose and can’t have everyone is school at once.)

PK should absolutely be prioritized over older grades. It serves multiple essential functions -- childcare, socializing, school preparation -- none of which can be effectively done via DL. With PK, it should be in-person or nothing. Other grades really need to be in-person, too, but kids can at least get some value out of DL at the older elementary level. There simply is no point for PK and if the district is going to claim to offer it, they should actually offer it. It should be among the first, if not the first, grades back.

Everything PP stated about PK is true. Sadly you just refuse to accept PK is OPTIONAL! They don't have to be in school. They can play. They can nap. They can run around. They are free.

PK is optional and a school like janney should prioritize required grades. If anything PK there are likely in person alternatives available.

Hearst is only bringing 10 K students back for in-person learning. What a cluster!
