What to buy as a classic jewelry piece (Cartier bracelet, tennis bracelet etc)?

I wouldn’t get a bracelet. I don’t think they get much wear. I’m in long sleeves and/or a jacket for 8 months out of the year and a bracelet gets covered. It is rarely my pick.

These are nice items but so generic. In 30 years you will definitely be able to find the exact same items. Something unique that isn’t in every single person’s wardrobe would make more sense.

Cartier love bracelets and Van Cleef Alhambra jewelry are also generic. They're like the Louis Vuitton Neverfull of jewelry.

Exactly. They are so common they announce that you are part of the herd.

Buy something you like and will wear. The sentimental value will actually be in the fact that wearing it will bring back memories.

My grandmother divvied up her (high quality, old-fashioned) jewelry between her granddaughters. I got very large, perfectly round and flat freshwater pearl earrings, along with a couple of other things. I have so many memories of her wearing those pearls! But I would never wear earrings like that. Instead, I’m having them set in a Cartier-inspired bracelet (for shame, I know). I won’t wear that everyday, but I’ll wear it more often, and I will think about her every time I do.

The women who I know with nice bracelets have the Carter Love, JUC, VCA Sweet or 5 Motif, or a bangle from Bulgari or Hermès.

I think tennis bracelets are due for a comeback.

They never went away. Go look on any of the sites that sell jewelry that allow you to see what has been sold - ebay, 1st dibs, etc. They are one of the most likely to sell pieces of jewelry.

There was an article in Fortune recently on the new tennis bracelets. I can’t find the article, but bookmarked some of the jewelry. These are not your mother’s tennis bracelets!

Those bracelets are much more lightweight - smaller, thinner, and have much less gold, than any older bracelet. I bet the diamonds in them are very poor quality. You're getting so much less now with gold prices being so high. I would go to Tysons Watch and Jewelry or Ebah/Etsy and get a piece a few years older that isn't junk. It's just like all those jewelry lines that are mostly sterling. They sell that stuff for high end prices using low end materials.

Who even wears bracelets? They seem like the most impractical piece of jewelry, maybe one step above an anklet

Everyone wears bracelets. The next time you go to the grocery store, look around.

The only difference is the bracelets listed above are designed to cost less to make.

Is it that tennis bracelets are unpopular or that they are hugely expensive? How many people can drop 2k minimum on a bracelet?

From a 30 something - TB are just not on trend. I don’t think it’s price. The love is $4-6k, the 5 motif $4K.

Let’s say I know 100 affluent women (earning $200K a year for several years due to MD/JD/MBA) who are in their 30s. 5 have the love. 2 have the 5 motif. A few have both. They could afford a TB, but I think it’s seen as less fresh and modern than the current bangle bracelets.

TB will come back eventually, that I do agree with.

I think what matters is that you wear it daily and your girls have memories of you wearing it.

My grandmother always wore a yellow gold ring with a flower made of peridots. Just a very simple ring. She wore it as her wedding ring. It’s not worth more than $300 but is priceless to me. Just looking at it makes me feel and remember what a warm and loving grandma she was. I wear it once in a while and might wear it more often as I get older.

Don’t worry about spending $$$$ on some bracelet that DCUM tells you is on trend. Get something you love and wear it daily.
Your girls will treasure that.

I would never pay good money for a VCA Alhambra piece- very expensive for semi-precious stones you have to baby and can’t get wet.

Not if you are looking at resale value.

I don't think they ever went away, but it's more about fashion. I think the fashion of tennis bracelets will be coming back.
