Gift for first period?

How humiliating. I would never have forgiven my mother if she did this to me.

I've seen people suggest going to dinner with dad, or dad bringing home flowers... that's so cringy and child-marraige-y. "You've become a woman, now! Let's wine and dine you like a suitor, 13-yr-old."

The dad thing is weird. Does Mom take son to dinner for his first _____?

Well in advance I had given my daughter a zippered make-up bag and had bought the supplies which she put in it, something to keep in her locker at school just in case. But when the time came we didn’t “celebrate” or anything. As far as Dad goes, I mentioned it to him later that evening and that was it.

I need to start thinking about this too, and see lots of comments here and elsewhere about “period underwear”. I’ve never used it so if anyone who has can let me know what is the best type to get to have on hand for a preteen?

LOL "period underwear" is the old, ratty pair with the stains on them you wear in case you have a leak.

i m so dating myself, in this reference, but there was a show called Nip/Tuck on fox, and they celebrates annies first period with a "princes menses" party. it was hysterical...

DH here, please don't do this. Its so cringe worthy.

nothing says fun like "hey honey lets celebrate the fact that for the next 50 years for 2-4 days a month every 27 or so days you will be bloated, and hormonal, and Oh, you body will leak and you can't control it. woo hoo"

Don't exaggerate! It's only 40 years. But 2 to 4 days a month? How about 5, for sure.

Period underwear is absorbent leakproof underwear deigned to absorb upwards of 8 tsp of liquid. Some wear just the underwear. Some like it as back up to a pad, tampon or cup.

Do you have any experience with it and a brand to recommend? Obviously this is what I was talking about, not ratty old crap...

Thinx is one brand. I just couldn’t see my 10 yo using tampons or pads (I had a feeling they wouldn’t be taken care of in a hygienic manner when used) and I got her a ton of Thinx and they are great. She just chucks them in her dirty clothes when she’s done because they’re black and you can’t see any stains they make. They are a touch thicker than normal underwear but she has never complained about that. They don’t have girls sizes but an XS has been fine.

sorry I don't have innie I have an outie... I don't know what I don't know. but I'll bet 5 days a month for 40 years, feels like 50 years... I'll take the random uncontrolled erection over a period any day...

I offered to organize a girls-only celebration for DD but she was horrified. She only wanted me to keep it under wraps. It didn't occur to me to get her something tangible. Your heart is in the right place, OP. That's what matters. Decades from now your DD will laugh at this, as will mine.
