Expensive Crib

A quality comfy rocker is worth it but not more than 500 dollars.

I would do the opposite -- spend money on a quality dresser and nightstand because those will be used throughout their entire childhood, while the crib will only be used for 1-3 years. That's what we did and we have no regrets.

But trends in furniture finishes change through the years. That’s why so many people choose white furniture. You can buy different colors at different times. OP’s DW doesn’t like white, and he won’t be able to match the brown eight years from now, when DC needs a desk. Much better to get a safe crib, and go cheap on everything else. I never decorated my nursery. The baby made it to four. Now we are going to fix it up when he can appreciate it.

You know that furniture does not have to exactly match the shade of every other piece of furniture in the room, right?

As for the Bellini crib, it was passed down twice and is now converted to the headboard for the third child (full size bed).

No regrets.

We were the third family to use our IKEA crib, which we converted into a toddler bed for our second child. It cost less than $150.

My wife chose the darker color because they gray was too light and she hates white. We will keep looking but people rave about these. We have two friends who bought the furnitures and it lasted them through 2 and 3 kids.

i used the jenny lind, it is greenguard certified and only $199. I paid extra $50 to buy the toddler bed railing. it lasted thru 2 kids and i gave it to a friend to use for her toddler.

pottery barn has never been equivalent to high quality.

I used a pack-n-play for both kids who are now in college. THey didn't stay in cribs long enough to bother with one, couldn't see the point as they were born pre-Instagram.

When they're older, they will put stickers on them etc. etc. It's not worth it to try to police that, in my opinion; it's going to happen whether you want to or not. We got a nice non-toxic, low profile crib (b/c I'm short) that was about $700, which we used for 2 kids and then sold. The rest of the furniture is Ikea. That way we don't have to stress out when they put stickers etc. on their dressers and nightstands. When they get older, maybe we'll upgrade.

I tend to agree. The stickers, chalk, markers etc etc! Splurge on quality beds and mattresses when they are older.

My kids never did any of that but we supervised them. Why would you allow that?

I'm the PP. They go to their rooms for quiet time every day for an hour. They don't nap anymore so they play unsupervised. Sometimes they bring stickers or whatever. There are a lot of hills and I'm not dying on this one. I did it to my (cheap) childhood furniture, and want to give my kids some degree of autonomy over what they do in their bedrooms. We have lots of high quality furniture in the house and spend enough energy policing that

OP here. We will look into other crib but my wife is picky when it comes to style and color.

She said the ikea one is okay but hates the color. She would want to find paint to stain it darker.

We are looking into something cheaper like DaVinci.

All of the furniture will be used for additional kids and passed down.

The Ikea ones are pretty crappy but you can find a nice one for $300-500 as a compromise.

You need to supervise your kids.

Having a newborn is super tough. If having a beautiful nursery will bring your wife joy during those really tough nights, and you can truly afford it (like- you can buy nice furniture and also begin saving for college at birth) I say DO IT. I really find beautiful spaces calming. I know some people may not GAF, and that’s totally fine too— but there are so few things you can really do during a pandemic to make newborn life more enjoyable, so my vote is for spending money where you can, if you have it to spare.

OP that’s fine if your wife wants the PBK one for the style of it. Just don’t deceive yourselves that the quality is there, or that it’s eco friendly. PB/PBK was higher end years ago. It’s made in China crap now, and overpriced (with bad customer service) for what it is. I had an Oeuf crib that was expensive but lasted through three kids and then sold for a decent amount on Craigslist. Get whatever crib you want for style, up to whatever price you can afford. We splurged (too much, in retrospect, as others on here have said— this stage is short and us having 3 kids to use the stuff barely made it worthwhile. But you could not have convinced me of that w/ my first as I was also rather high maintenance and ecstatic to be pregnant.). But don’t kid yourself that PBK is remotely fancy, quality, or eco friendly.

I’m telling you OP, your wife is getting suckered by the imagine PBK sells to pregnant ladies that think they are getting something high end for their baby. It is junk, overpriced junk that will look terrible in less than 2 years. If you want the best quality, get something Amish made. It is lot more money than PBK, but you get what you pay for at least. Or check craigslist for something from Stanley Young America. They were a US furniture company that made gorgeous children’s cribs but no longer make a children’s line as of a few years ago.

Those are gorgeous! Not OP but clearly a better option than PBK

Baby stuff has to be functional, comfortable and beautiful, but above all, functional. The baby market is full of wonderful design concepts that are worth splurging on, so I suggest you BOTH look for something really special. Don't go for the bland matching suite without digging a little deeper.

For example, I really loved Stokke products: the Xplory stroller is the greatest invention in strollers, the oval crib was great as well, and we still use the high chairs, years later.
