occasional glass of wine

Can you get away with some? Yeah, sure. But it's really not hard to give it up, so what's the point?

I bet there's quite a bit of overlap, which appears confounding but isn't when one scratches the surface.

What's confounding about someone choosing to follow the science in both scenarios?

The thing that is confounding is the acceptance of some risk in the first scenario and the sheer hysteria in the second.

I think communicability may be the variable you're not factoring in.

#3 had a half glass now and then. He’s awesome. My mom told me stories of her sister who had several late miscarriages then when pregnant with my cousin (also awesome) would have a glass of wine on the porch in the summer she was pregnant).
Sometimes relaxing with wine does the trick. No judgement here.

Drink the wine. Smoke. But, don't ask for sympathy because your stupidity and selfishness has harmed your baby. If you can't give up alcoholic beverages for your child then you are an alcoholic and should not be having a baby.

Fair enough. That's a big factor in COVID. But drinking alcohol when pregnant (even in small doses) doesn't happen in a vacuum--the fetus can be affected. ACOG has been clear there is no safe amount of alcohol for a fetus. So then let's apply the same amount of measured caution and rationality to both, at least.

typical DCUM for it to go off the rails/everyone shaming one another.

I'm not "thinking about wine so much/have a problem." I'm actually still puking all the time and have no interest of sipping any wine.

I'm hoping that I feel better by Christmas and was thinking of having a small glass of red wine but would not be in the third trimester yet and did not remember if that was ok or not. I'm going to dig out my copy of Expecting Better.

Like I previously said- two healthy children, and maybe 2 glasses per pregnancy. This is very different from people who did not stop drinking at all etc.

Wishing everyone safe and healthy holiday season.

I’m someone who is totally fine with drinking an occasional glass of wine in pregnancy but your op and this follow up seemingly designed to not let the thread die into obscurity has convinced me you’re a pot stirrer. This topic always turns nasty and you were told that on the first page and are now acting shocked that it happened (and this thread is actually one of the mildest I’ve seen on this topic)

I’m in the section of the ven diagram you’re confounded by. There is virtually zero evidence that an occasional glass of wine causes issues in pregnancy. Conversely, odds are decent right now that if I’m living in certain areas of the country and I go about my life that I will become a part of a covid chain of communicability. And if I am in a chain, the odds that I have contributed to an actual persons death are pretty high. Even if I don’t get that sick myself. There are 260,000 dead Americans that have died in the last 9 months from this disease. This is a real and tangible risk that is higher than taking a sip of wine while pregnant
