His just killed any hope he had of seeking higher offices.

One thing all people despise is a hypocrite.

The optics here are so bad I have to assume the supt. and his family have a good reason for choosing a private school for one of their children.

THAT SAID

I don’t understand why it’s taboo to ever question the choices public officials and elected lawmakers make for their children. They’re in charge of our schools, and yet they often don’t view those schools as acceptable for their own children. That’s worth discussing, and yet it rarely is.

He chose the private school for his older child while his younger child (elementary age?) is still in ACPS - I think the implication there might be that the younger kids can go back in person at some point this year while the older grades will not. He’s cutting his losses now.

Hutchings has stated that he hopes to become Secretary of Education one day. I hope he’s proud that he got that Secretary’s attention with his decision to opt out of the school system he runs.

BOOM.

There's a very simple way out of this for him. Issue a statement that states: I wish I had been more thoughtful with my statements about parents utilizing all resources available to them to educate their children. Recent circumstances in my life have made me realize I was wrong.

I apologize.

But he won't.

He'll dig in and stay silent while the criticism mounts. He'll hope it'll fade. It might fall of the front page, but he will go down as the Superintendent that slammed Alexandria families for using pods or sending their kids to privates. And then did precisely that a month later for his own child.

^^^Exactly. I’ve been a strong defender of ACPS on these boards. Now I’m beginning to feel like a fool. If the superintendent doesn’t trust the school for his own child, then why should I trust it for mine? I’m not buying the argument that it’s a personal decision for him and we should respect his privacy. The school system should be able to support all kinds of learners, especially under a superintendent whose mantra has been “equity for all.” If he sees a problem, then he should fix it! Terrible leadership. Get rid of him.

I mean I am not shocked
Any UMC Black family I met who actually lived in the City of Alexandria sent their kid to private school. They cared about education and didn’t want their kids slowed down or dumbed down by being associated with FARMS students. I don’t blame them at all and think it’s the right move.

"EQUITY FOR ALL!"

* Except for my child. She'll be receiving special consideration.

I don’t see how he recovers from this. As a parent I am upset but as a teacher I would be furious. I don’t know how he rebuilds trust with those he leads.

+1. Teachers , principals, paraprofessionals, basically everyone in the ACPS organization.

I absolutely did not like the woman before him who was the interim--she seemed totally checked out--so I was so happy to hear of his hire and to read about his committent to ACPS and public education.

Despite his very judgy vibe, I was still happy because I really felt like he was in this with everyone else and had a personal stake in making things better. Well, no.

I work for ACPS and I am proud that he made the decision that was best for his child and so are my colleagues.

I am surprised that no one is looking at the fact that maybe he wants his child to forge her own path without having someone accusing her of receiving favoritism or a handout because her dad is the superintendent. Children and staff can be cruel. As far as I have seen, she is a dynamic young lady and she needs to get from under her dad’s shadow and make her own path. We only have one high school and it is not fair for her to have to have one choice where she is under a microscope.

I have personally seen staff members who bring their children to the school where they teach and their children are treated with favoritism and/or bullied. It never goes well...ever. Not saying that happened to his daughter but I can see his point for moving her.

PP you sound like you work for dr. H PR team. It is not that he chose to send his child to a private school it’s that he previous blasted others who made that choice. It also signals to the teachers who are tired burned out and frustrated that their efforts don’t matter. Respect is easy to lose and hard to earn back.

People are especially angry because it is clear he has no intention of allowing ACPS students to return to school. The focus is on Virtual+ (which doesn't work for many kids). His child can go to school in person, but ACPS kids can't?!?
