Not sure about UVa but probably no money from UMD. Crazy many kids with high stats from MCPS.

True but they are probably CS or similar. OP's kid hasn't specified a major.

+1

My MCPS magnet kid with a 1560 and 4.8 weighted GPA got $5k/year from UMD.

my ds got into Vandy off waitlist this year with 1480. 3.8 gpa from private school. Full pay helps I am pretty sure

If her counselor thinks her "choice schools" are still a reach, did the counselor also help her identify match and likely schools? As long as she has some affordable choices that she likes and which are likely to admit her, why not go ahead and apply to the "choice schools" with the 1490? Also, does she have any preferences about schools other than "the best school that she can get in to"?

My DS had the same score (also got a 34 ACT) and the most selective school he applied to was UMD (but he had his own priorities and a few B+ grades on his transcript).

Big money merit aids are not major specific. Department schloarships are but very small amount.

My child has similar stat. Can you tell us which private school your child was in (or a few similar schools if you do not want to reveal the name of the school)? Thanks.

That's all well and good but with Covid, I just don't think we can do it again. She's all As. Has taken 5 APs - scores all 5s, one 4. One she did not take the exam. Captain of sports team. Other extracurriculars - nice but not huge. What are the best schools you think she could get into?

Her scores are great, and many students will have no scores at all.

Example: I started a thread asking if maybe my son could take some kind of online test, like the online SATs, and use that as an SAT substitute.

So, anyhow, I think your daughter should simply apply to a wide range of schools, including her dream schools, affordable in-state public flagship-level schools, and financial safeties, and see what happens.

The same would be true if she had all 800s. Yale might be about as much a lottery for a student with all 800s as it would be for your daughter.

Cornell and Michigan as safeties

PP must have a child at Rice. No one would put Rice next to Yale. Rice is much much much easier to get in than Cornell and Michigan.

Really?

Vandy cares more about SAT than GPA and full pay is great.

Hmm, anyone care to chance a full pay URM with a 1510 and 3.47, at Vandy?

Looking around in that range, it seems to me that Notre Dame cares more about GPA than scores, and being need-blind, full pay won't help - can anyone confirm?

To the PPs discussing Rice, per Naviance Rice admits fewer kids than HYPS from our private high school out west. Same for Duke and Northwestern.

Vanderbilt is need-blind.

UVa doesn’t give merit aid.
