why are so many people complaining about the snow? I don't get it!

You should look for the right employers... I work for Health Care and Emergency personnel. They have no "snow days" so we have plenty of work to do while everybody is home...

agreed i pay my nanny anytime she can't make it in due to weather or illness and give her paid vacation (3 weeks last year). If I were using a daycare I would pay a monthly fee...I feel she should get the same or how else could she plan for rent expenses, etc. if the pay were unpredictable. That said---I have an INCREDIBLY reliable nanny she does not abuse this...and I don't think she has had a sick day in 2 years.

I've been enjoying it--but we haven't been trapped or house bound. We are 2 blocks to action and were out at the bookstore, computer store, etc. yesterday afternoon (where there was a holiday feeling) and then drove to a friend's superbowl party last night...and I made it to my gym this morning. I think if i were truly 'trapped' I'd feel claustrophobic...and if I were without power I'd be suicidal. My kids are pretty calm ones--for boys so they haven't driven me up the wall and I've enjoyed doing things we don't usu. get a chance to do.

that's wonderful you are loving your life, it really is.

but don't go judging others who are miserably stuck in their homes, without power, without husbands or help to shovel, with kids going stir crazy, without a way to get to work, and no hope of ever seeing a plow come down the street before getting hit with another half foot of snow.

don't be so smug. one day you will find yourself on the other side.

Gee, if I had this type of outlook, I would hate life too.

I know, isn't it so annoying to have to deal with people who are just positive, optimistic, and happy? I don't know why they just can't get mired in misery and hopelessness like the rest of us.

I don't hate life at life you nitwit. Just pointing out some reasons why some of us out here aren't farting rainbows about all this snow with more on the way.

there is a difference between happiness/optimism and trying to shove your joy down people's throats when they have legitimate reasons to be upset.

would you smile at a cancer patient and tell them "well at least you're alive today"!?

blind optimism is idiocy.

For me it's because my company does not pay for snow days, I have no childcare, I am a single parent, a single shoveler.... this all makes my already hard life, harder.

If you really want work opportunities, nanny - ask the families to come and get you. Otherwise, me and my work ethic do NOT believe that you are praying for anything but time with your boyfriend. Moms are NOT stupid. Especially moms that pay for much needed help. It's not a charity.

Another nanny here - WHy so judgemental? I pity your boyfriend. My employer is maying me to stay home because she cares and does not want to endanger my car or health.

I am laughing my ass off at the "farting rainbows" comment!

I'm laughing my ass off at the drama off anyone insinuating snow has anything to do with cancer? Are they completely off their rocker?

There are employers that don't have the option of NOT working or having life supporting medical appointments. To me, this is more important than your time in bed with your boyfriend. Don't tell me you want to work unless you actually show up. It's called responsibility. Grow up.

3 kids - two under two with no power for most of the weekend, for us that meant no stove and no heat. it was a barrel of laughs.

there is a time and place for this kind of snow, like when i was single and carefree and living in Vail for a season.

you get a gold star for being such a trooper with your one kid with heat and stove OP! gosh, yay you.

Do car wrecks affect you, too? You give ogres a bad name. You just sound like you're miserable even when the sun is out and the weather is 85 degrees, no humidity.

It's funny. I can't stand the harsh DC summers. I hear so many blow-offs about that one. Now to enjoy the snow, it's a crime.

It's what you're used to, I suppose. Just don't tell me DC doesn't usually get snow. I've been here forever, and they get snow every year. They should have it down to a science by now. But the locals love to spin it. It's actually pretty hilarious.

The ones that have a problem for real are the few with health problems AND without heat. I do hope they are safe. The other ones are just whiners. OP, I'm with you. Enjoy!

I agree with this. Every year I hear, "we're not prepared because we are just not used to this," and every year I think "but we are having this conversation ... um ... every year - so clearly we *are* used to this."

DC does get snow. DC pretends that it doesn't get snow.

But DC doesn't get a big snowfall every few weeks, as can happen with regularity other areas. So it just doesn't make economic sense to spend a lot of money on maintaining a fleet of snowplows.
