"I am a Nanny and also do other babysitting and can't stand the snow for a financial reason. I lost so many jobs it is not even funny and they are calling for at least 5 more inches on Wednesday, so so sad."
There are TONS of people who need your help right now, just so you know. There are SO many people who are stuck. I've heard of nannies preferring to spend their time with their boyfriends, which doesn't exactly cut it with me. |
OP I completely agree with you. It has been so nice to step off the rat race that is life around here and do things like the ones you mentioned instead of spending our weekend running from activity to activity and doing errands. Having grown up in an area that gets lots of snow, I'm also happy that my kids are getting to see a real winter! I do sympathize with folks that lost power for a long time; that is no fun, esp. with young kids. |
OP, I guess you don't have a major leak in your family room, do you? Sitting around with 5 buckets/trashcans/plastic receptacles for the water from the roof? Worried that the roof may fall in? Didn't think so!! |
I'm with the OP. I love winter and snow in particular. Yes I shoveled a good chunk of yesterday and today. It was nice to be outside. Lots of neighbors were outside too. Walked the dog, who also loves the snow. Went sledding. Sat by the fire. Yes we had wet clothes but you know what - they dried out. To be fair we did have power. |
It's funny. I can't stand the harsh DC summers. I hear so many blow-offs about that one. Now to enjoy the snow, it's a crime. It's what you're used to, I suppose. Just don't tell me DC doesn't usually get snow. I've been here forever, and they get snow every year. They should have it down to a science by now. But the locals love to spin it. It's actually pretty hilarious. The ones that have a problem for real are the few with health problems AND without heat. I do hope they are safe. The other ones are just whiners. OP, I'm with you. Enjoy! |
I also can't stand DC summers. And I'm from Brazil, born and raised. |
I also can't stand the summers here either. The trade of was the mild winters and this year is a huge disappointment. I grew up in New England and Upstate NY and lived inOhio and Wisconsin as an adult and am very familiar with the snow and how much fun it can be. This just isn't the place I would choose to live when getting three feet of snow. There isn't enough equipment or knowledge for proper, timely, snow removal. |
I agree with this. Every year I hear, "we're not prepared because we are just not used to this," and every year I think "but we are having this conversation ... um ... every year - so clearly we *are* used to this." DC does get snow. DC pretends that it doesn't get snow. |
Nanny here again. I am happy with my Part-time Nanny family and they told me not to come in today. The babysitting jobs I lost for the weekend (4) did not go out because of the snowstorm as it was not safe. I am not trying to spend time with a boyfriend, I am praying for work opportunities! |
I'm fascinated by this comment. What doesn't "cut it" with you? That some people enjoy snow days as an unexpected fun day off? Why is it not okay for a nanny to not want to enjoy a day with her boyfriend but it's okay for all the working moms here to be allowed to prefer to spend the day with their kids rather than fighting bad roads, etc... to get into their own workplaces? btw, am not a nanny. Just caught off guard by the nasty comment. |
If you really want work opportunities, nanny - ask the families to come and get you. Otherwise, me and my work ethic do NOT believe that you are praying for anything but time with your boyfriend. Moms are NOT stupid. Especially moms that pay for much needed help. It's not a charity. |
(This does not apply to the people who lost power).
It all just depends if you are a "glass half empty" or "glass half full" kind of person. |
If I lived somewhere we could walk to someplace for food, a bathroom, and heat I would be enjoying it. No heat, using water from the tub to flush the toilet and only flushing after poo or three-four pees, running out of kid friendly food and then a week ahead with no school, 5 more inches of snow and more possible power outages plus work deadlines that I don't know how I will meet. Not happy about burning through vacation time especially with spring break coming up and its longer this year. Completely sucks. |
OP is clearly someone with a household staff. |
I would take two weeks of snow over four months of stifling, suffocating, health compromising, oppressive heat ANYTIME! |
