I think OP makes an interesting point. I’m in one of the areas that sends a lot of kids to TJ and I was generally happy my now 9th grader chose not to apply. I thought it would have been good for him in many ways, but not good in others, including the pressure and stress.

And to OP’s point, the idea of him going to school so far away was daunting. The depot is close by and that could have worked but the idea of getting on the beltway at night to go to meetings, concerts, etc did not excite me. I also felt it would really detract from our family time when we only have 4 more years together all the time.

I can imagine all these things impacting whether a family sends their kids to TJ, particularly families with fewer socioeconomic resources. Keep in mind that FCPS high schools really are generally very high quality, even those people tend to denigrate on thus forum.

I think the SB should be trying to increase diversity at TJ, although I’m not sure this lottery is the right approach, but it’s an interesting question as to whether the TJ experience just isn’t seen as that attractive to many families for a host of practical and other reasons.

SB doesn't care. They just want to pander to blacks and step all over Asians.
