Does it seem as if it’s trendy to not like little dogs?

I have pugs. This thread is eye opening as to prejudices lurking under the surface when you all see me walking down the street with my sturdy guys. Who aren’t barking or jumping on you. Just ... walking.

Really nice, kind sentiments here.

If your dog is walking down the street in a well-behaved way, I don't think anyone here has said they hate your dog.

Even if they don't want one.

Trendy? I always disliked little dogs, so does my DH. Since childhood. They are often very nasty litte things. Littel dog next door yaps and lunges at my golden. SOme owners do not train their small dogs. That is what, I think, causes the dislike of little dogs among many large dog owners. They lung, bite, yap, and the owners smile and say dog is cute.

I would say little dogs are trendy now. It's like they want a cat but thought it was not trendy so they got a small dog. I dislike people that have small dogs that they can't control. I have a friend with a small dog that is well behaved. I like her dog.

We dislike most people with small dogs. We realize that they are phonies.

I more see men get made fun of for having little fluffy dogs.

There are conveniences to the small dogs. Very portable and ours are good for our kid.

If you got a normal dog, it could walk, so portability wouldn't be an issue.

Personally I just think small dogs aren't as cute as big ones.

There is a way higher percentage of small dogs with ugly features like smashed faces, pig noses, snaggleteeth, etc. There are way more small dogs with gross wiry hair or even worse, human-looking hair. They have a way higher instance of unattractive traits like snorting and wheezing due to their stubby faces, and their high pitched yips are annoying.

Big dogs just look more like...well...dogs.

I wouldn’t go this far but definitely have noticed a difference between the personalities of small-dog and big-dog owners. Can’t put my finger on it but pretty much all my good friends own big dogs (or cats).

Everyone loves a big dog. They are so handsome. But a lot more work. Some people like little dogs.

I have a medium sized lab, used to have a medium sized golden retriever. Both dogs are/were very friendly to other dogs, and most big dogs we met on are friendly and trained because the consequences of not training your big dog are more severe to the owner (getting yanked around at a minimum) so medium and big dog people pretty much have to train their big dog to maintain control. Little dogs on the other hand are a mixed bag. Some are trained and friendly, and we are always happy to interact with them, but lots will growl, bark, lunge at my dog and are poorly trained and socialized, and the owner just picks them up (which actually reinforces the behavior and validates the little dogs bad reaction to seeing another dog), so yeah, a bigger percentage of little dogs that we encounter are problematic because the owner hasn't put in the correct training and socializing effort--treating them more like cats than like dogs. I don't hate little dogs, but I never know how an interaction with one will go because a lot of the people that own them don't put in the work.

I agree with the training thing. My friend has a little dog and was very good about training. He told me a lot of people said they didn't care if the dog jumped up b/c he was little and that you didn't need to train little dogs. I think that attitude is a problem.

My thoughts are if you're gonna get a dog, get a DAWG, lol. A big ole, romping, happy go lucky big boy or girl.

I have an 85 lb, intelligent, gentle working breed. When I walk him, every tiny dog in the neighborhood yips and growls and lunges at him, which he ignores, but doesn't like (rushes past).

It's not the fault of the tiny dogs. They were bred not for smarts or usefulness, but to be tiny and cute.

Personally, if I were going to get an animal that small, I'd get a cat--way cooler, funnier animals.

Oh my goodness get over yourself! Not everyone loves a) your dogs b) any dogs or c) ANY PETS AT ALL.

It's ok! Really! People can like different things!

But yes, maybe it's a good thing for you to realize not everyone finds your dogs adorable and to keep them AWAY from people in public whose feelings you are unclear about.

The training thing is huge. I know very few small-dog owners who take training seriously, and they often think it's cute how their dog barks or lunges or snarls at bigger dogs or whatever because it shows how "brave" the dog is. When what it shows is that their dog is badly socialized and poorly trained.

I don’t dislike them; I don’t like that they’re usually not well-trained. I’m not sure if it’s because they’re not smart or because the owners don’t bother.

A major reason why people hate small dogs - your animals should not be "portable" - stop bringing them everywhere. Don't be that ahole.

Grew up with goldens and as an adult had a golden and lab. Always loved big dogs. Just got a cavapoo and LOVE having a smaller dog. Fits in the car more easily, fits in the bed easily, less food, smaller poop to pick up, so awesome to be able to hold. Haven’t gone on a walk yet...so not sure how she’ll be with other big dogs.
