How much does Facebook, Google, Amazon pay?

Anonymous wrote:I interviewed at Amazon a few years ago for an in house legal job based in Va. My base would have been 280k. Add on stock and other fringe benefits and I would have been over 300k. I have friends in the DMV who have been there for years and make between 350k-500k. They work like dogs -- no different from big law.

That doesn't make sense. You were probably getting speciality or other bonuses but generally base pay is $160k. They were screwing you on stock though.

this is the only answer.

also, for some actual datapoints here: amzn, marketing, 220k (with the stock appreciation)

+1,000 look at levels.

Anyway my experience

$200K to start is normal
$500K as mid level manager normal
$700-$900K for a senior role normal

I am director level for the feds- are there specific executive job listing sites/recruiters for private tech? Or is it more by networking and referrals? I have not encountered these salary ranges. Mid 200s seems average for CA.

Lives in NH and was 75% remote pre Covid and now totally remote with no plans to go back.

DH looked into a tech division for Amazon last year and would make about 250K. We also live in NH. He would have had to travel to Boston a couple of days a week. A couple of days remote.

How good is your friend to have gotten that role doing "computer stuff"?

What is his job title? Would love to find similar job.

$200,000 to start - does it include the signing bonus? At FB, a $70,000 signing bonus might not be unusual. A $130,000 salary can mean possibly being homeless in pre-COVID Silicon Valley.

We considered moving there on about $200K. It is doable but you live really really far out. Not much different from here.

No it’s very different from here. Way more expensive. I’ve lived in both.

I’m from CA, you’d need at least $500+ HHI to live in a semi desirable area. COL is more than in DMV. I’d discourage commuting- coming from a former road warrior. Your diminished time and health is not worth it.

If you are comparing salaries of DC area to SF then consider it almost double. $200K is nothing over there with high taxes (including state and RE), gas etc. I am in program management and looked into moving there which would have been a lateral move for me. Just with a comparison on the salaries, they double my offer easily before negotiation starts.

That's interesting.. because google announced WFH until July 2021. After that, who knows. There have been no decisions made but they are not big on working remotely fulltime. They require in office for at least some portion of the month/week. Ask me how I know

I have also heard Faang starting to Implement salary adjustments according to locality when remote.

Mid 200s is nothing in SF area or most of the other big cities such as LA, SD as compared to DC area. Double of what you are making in DC.

Really? that seems low. Why not just do a fed job at that point?

Most feds top out at about $160k, except in a few regulatory agencies.

But non-litigating feds have awesome hours even compared up these jobs.

Agreed. I'd rather max as a 15 at the fed with a pension, and presumably maybe even at an agency that aligns with one's interests than work in Tech, not have job stability, no pension, just got 50k more? Am I missing something?

Say you work for an agency that aligns with your interests like the EPA or CDC or NIH or CBP? Questionable directives comes from the White House “leader.” Do you stay or do you then leave as it no longer aligns with your original ideals? Or do you just ride it out for stability as most govies and compromise your initial civil service ideals as you grow inconfident to transition to the private sector?

that’s a lie. My family member started there mid level 5 years ago making $200k. Bonus looks good on paper but it’s stock spread over the contract term (3 years in this case). After cash in its Ablut $100k bonus a year but that’s before taxes. Salary hasn’t gone up much since been there. Bonus has a bit but again, it’s not that great after taxes.

Some non-litigating in house jobs have awesome hours and get a real bonus, stock, 401k match, and don't top out at 160k. 160k is lower than the starting salary.

Lawyers do not have "awesome hours" at a FAANG company.

Mid level 5 would be about $360K. There’s obviously variance. Your family member sounds like they were on low end of that range.

An extra $100K in SF before taxes won't be much after you end up paying all the high taxes and adjusting COL.

I wasn’t talking about FAANGs. There are other in house positions that pay upwards of 300k and it’s a very reasonable hours and no weekend work. Occasional craziness if something happens, which is to be expected, but generally great hours.

$100K bonus is nothing in SF if it is also part of your salary.

Those sales are more for Sales than IT folks. Managers are making that, but not regular. Some of the signing bonuses are also for example, if you leave Amazon and walk away from stock options as you get the most options vested in year 3-4 to make up for that.
