Town of Vienna teens

Anonymous
Many residents in Vienna feel like they have been spared. Cases are very low according to the released data and many of us do not know anyone local who has been positive. I am scared because I know this can change any day and cases can rise exponentially. I remind my teens that the virus is still here even though they do not know anyone it has affected.

NP. Bunch of kids practicing baseball at Southside Park today, late afternoon. Couple of men coaching, a woman conversing a few feet from one man about what sounded like her role doing something for the team. Zero masks on anyone except one of the men. Why are kids' ball teams allowed to be operating right now? Maybe these idiot parents are convinced "kids don't get the virus/don't spread it if they do get it/you can't catch the virus outdoors" and all that debunked mythology.

These things are why the pandemic will go on and on.

These kids were told by the media that the thousands of people protesting outdoors did not lead to any spike in cases, because they were outdoors. Agree or disagree but you saw that reported too. I saw a huge increase in kids AND adults gathering outside after that. It happened everywhere.

This is a fair point.

Huh? The protesters were all masked. Outdoors + masks did not lead to a spike, true.

No, the weather got warm and people got tired of being careful. We had a window to tackle this thing and squandered it, and now people have given up.

Thirty seconds with google will show you that the protesters were not “all” masked. Facts matter.

Masks aren't required outdoors.

Sports are permitted in PHASE THREE.

You all sound completely insane.

We should not be in phase three. That's completely insane.

It's amazing how people cling to the states telling them certain phases are fine, when the reopenings drive increases in cases. You're all just looking for excuses to do what you like and damn public health or your "weak" neighbors and relatives who have the gall to be concerned or have chronic conditions.

The reopening were always going to increase cases. That’s how viruses work.

If people are following their state guidelines, you really have no basis for judging their behavior. You make your own choices, they make theirs.

Mostly adults are wearing masks or staying home.
The Vienna Whole Foods is a “never mind social distancing zone”. It’s the employees and the the shoppers for delivery. Those folks don’t even TRY to social distance.
I’m sure it the same everywhere though.

Yes this is the crisis

Except the kids typically have small bubbles of friends, 4-5 kids. In school the bubbles surge. School would be open for two weeks max, as that is how long it is to identify an outbreak.

If you are a parent of young kids, you can keep the bubble small. Tweens and teens are doing whatever they want.

My Vienna kid must be different, then. She (and her friends) are social distancing...

That's just your opinion. We are in stage 3 for over a month. This is the law. You might not agree with it, but we have to follow it. People are not looking for excuses, they don't need them to justify their legitimate activity.

I personally respect my neighbors who due to some medical conditions (including anxiety) prefer to stay in the lock down stage, but i have no sympathy for people who judging others and demanding that everything was locked down because of their fragile selves.

And by the way, there is no proof that re-opening drive increases in cases. We are testing much more now, therefore, there will be much more positive results. Have we not tested, the number of people who are positive would be exactly the same.

Virus does not care if your daughter socially distancing... only physical distance prevents the virus spread. Now think, why is the media wants your child not only be physically distanced from her friends, but also SOCIALLY distanced....

By social distance I meant physical distance. No one cares who you interact with electronically.

Protesters were not physically distanced ( many of whom were TOV teens) and every news source said the virus did not spread.

Now you want to tell these same teens to go back in hiding. Mixed messages do not work with teenagers.

In your post you said your daughter and her friends are "socially distancing", which presume no social contact.

Social distancing in the context were we isolate physically from social groups. That is what it is called. Socially distancing means no close in-person physical contact, as defined by the CDC.

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/social-distancing.html

This has been defined clearly in the US since March.

Do you understand why is your government defined it as "social" not "physical" distancing?

I am very concerned about the observed lack of social distancing. Outside is safer than inside, but not safe. And we do not know what is going on in peoples houses. I have seen facebook photos of kids and the friends at home.

With that said, the data right now shows that teens and tweens have the lowest growth rate of any age group in Northern VA, with a slightly negative Rt. My guess is there is a teen/tween bubble. They isolate themselves. As long as the virus in to in the age group, they will remain ok. But, that could change quickly.

I am very concerned.

But, with that said, it is a small minority of kids that are doing this. My DD and her friends are all social isolating. And the number of young people I see is a small fraction of the community. But, there are some adult roll models, largely sports coaches (including highly regarded school coaches) that are encouraging kids to play there sports. And there is not social distancing -- there could be....close the bleachers to spectators and use those to spread out.

Oh, and I do not believe this is isolated to Vienna. I see the same thing in Fairfax and in Arlington.

I am seeing the opposite. My kid's friends have not being socially distancing from the March, was hanging out all together at everyone's houses and outdoors, went together to beach houses, playing sports together, having sleepovers. We have a lot of MD parents in this group and a lot of scientists parents and we are all OK with this. None of the kids or parents became ill with Covid so far. I am sorry if you succumb to all this "social distancing" thing and have to put your and your child's life on hold.

You don't understand how science works do you?

I perfectly understand how viruses work and I understand how human immune system respond to it. So far, everything goes like it should be -- kids are getting exposed to the virus and building their immune system in response.

And getting the adults around them sick. Unfortunately, there neighbor, who is diabetic. Dies...But you got to offing plat. F*CTARDS!

No one canceled the Darwin law... your neighbor who is diabetic will die, the healthy human species will survive and continue to contribute to earth's population.

As a Vienna resident with diabetes and heart disease, I can only hope your genes are better than mine. As for darwinism, I have procreated, and passed my genes off.

The good news is medicine negates most of my issues....you, however, will remain an asshole.

DP: can you name one good reason why should we sacrifice the future of 180,000 children for one old lady with diabetes? What are the benefits for the society overall? You are not functioning without medication, so it is a huge drain on our health system.

It is not one old lady. Nationwide, watch what happens in other communtiies. We are to fu***g dence to behave properly to allow us to reopen. Getting this back to Vienna, at about 240 I drove by Waters fields. People were watching a baseball game, no masks and crowded bleachers. They were not the mandated distance. This will not end will. But people like you don't get it. If we followed the protocols religiously like they did in other places, we could be reopening safely. The kids could be in school.

Instead, we turned PPE into a political issue.

Oh, and the issue with the schools is the teachers did not feel safe coming in.
