Federal job stability

At our agency if someone is fired through the correct process, PIP, opportunity to improve, etc., the manager is allowed to backfill that position (ass opposed to when someone quits and the management needs to seek approval to backfill and it is not always given). That is a great motivator to do the work to let a poor performer go. That said, it takes real incompetence to be fired, just being a slacker that does the minimum or a somewhat poor job rarely is a basis for firing. It takes an agency having a commitment to supporting a strong HR team.

I consider my fed job secure because I do a good job, not because of the workplace protections. And in a situation such as the pandemic job security is not subject to the profitability of my employer.

State department doesn't like to fire people due to the negative publicity from a potential lawsuit.

I'm more senior so I know of a lot of people that got fired. When people are fired, it is really well hidden. My agency fires around 2% per year.

Sad, but true. I know professional Feds who admit they can finish their full-time job working 3-4 (sometimes less) days a week at home. What does that tell you? And they have all been promoted consistently. Yes, they may be very good at what they do, but they are also overpaid for the work they do. Think how many fewer Fed jobs would be out there if the ones we have were working 5 full days a week.

I find this more common in private sector. I work a Fed position where I work 45-55 hrs/week and my colleagues are doing the same.

This happened at my agency. As far as I know, they are all still employed.

Guy at my agency got caught watching porn and was fired. This is within recent history. I don’t think this type of thing flies at all nowadays.

I could see maybe 20-30 years ago things being different. I hear all sorts of stories from my older colleagues about people who used to go out drinking on lunch breaks and such that I can’t imagine being tolerated now.

I have direct knowledge of three employees getting escorted out of the building and having clearances revoked for watching porn at work. Places don't tolerate that sh*t anymore.

porn will get you out.

I've been a consultant for going on 15 years now. We occasionally get some good project manager fed clients but most of them are terrible. They would last maybe a month at my firm.

This is at a financial agency. It’s a little different over there. But no he was not fired and this was during the Obama era.

Porn, Drinking, Drugs or stealing is the only thing that will get you.

And honestly you get like 3 strikes with those.

You missed one - for jobs based on quotas, not meeting your quota will get you fired, e.g., Board of Veterans’ Appeals.

Most of the feds in my office are coming from private-sector firms where they were contractors.
