Both positive and negative FACTS can help someone deciding whether their kid will feel comfortable somewhere.

That is why both the good and bad information is valuable. It is about balance/truth, not a pep rally.

I've never seen a heroin addict nodding off in Davidson, but you don't have to go far from Johns Hopkins to see that.

~crickets~

I totally agree but who turned this into a competition between Hopkins and Davidson?

The person asked about Davidson, and a poster related their experience.

If you have seen drug addicts in Baltimore, and there is a thread relevant to that, go for it. I am sure that prospective applicants to schools in Baltimore might take that into consideration.

But on this thread, the chip on your shoulder had caused you to run off the rails. Stand down weirdo.

You do realize that multiple posters have called you out for your random observation, as if a single Confederate flag seen in NC was important information to share about a top LAC in a liberal college town, right?

If anyone needs to take a break, it’s you.

But johns hopkins???? Now that is truly random.

Any update on the Davidson ED notification date? The website says 12/15, but does anyone know if this is an exact date or a notify by date?

They're also excellent for preparing kids to apply to graduate schools and professional schools Davidson has an excellent reputation among academics.

+1 definitely

This is second hand and child specific, but I will share, for what it’s worth. I have two close friends, one has a DD at Wake Forest, the other has a DD at Davidson, both are from DMV (this matters). Both are great schools and well respected. Socially, the WF girl is unhappy. WF has a solid Southern Girl vibe, somewhat chilly if your Mum and Grandmum aren’t debutante alumni. Gotta be in that “right” sorority Southern social class or whatever. Davidson girl is thriving socially. Lots of kids from all over the country.

Sorry you are so sensitive to this.

North Carolina is different from Maryland culturally, but again, this family has a right to hear from people who have visited the campus. My post was constructive, yours was defensive.

Actually, you sound very defensive.

I apologize in advance if this question comes across as naive, ill-informed or idiotic. I realize other posters have more experience with the whole college application and decision process, and we are trying to work our way through it for the first time.

DD recently was accepted EA to Tulane with merit and honors program. She’s pretty excited about that. But she also has an application pending at Davidson, which is more exciting to me from an academic standpoint lol. Her desired major waffles between English and Psychology. I assume DD would not get any merit if she were fortunate enough to be accepted by Davidson, and she doesn’t qualify for need based aid. If both of these schools were options, I’m wondering if it’s more worthwhile for DD to go to Tulane or to “invest” in the smaller, more personalized experience Davidson seems to offer. I would expect that DD would be want to go on to grad school. Not sure how Davidson grade deflation, balanced by quality of education, factors into that. TIA

If you can afford Davidson and grad school...then I would say it will definitely be worth it.

Look at their grad school acceptance rates, vs Wake, regarding the grade deflation. We heard that while there...but it may not have an impact on acceptances.

The campus and town are lovely. Easy travel by plane. Impressive honor code. I think it is well worth the investment for the curated undergrad experience.

Thank you PP, very helpful!

My kids loved Davidson when we visited though it is Very small. I went to a small LAC so I loved that but my kids were a little worried. That said, my daughter bought a Davidson sweatshirt and everywhere she wore it, someone stopped to ask if she went there and to relay some sort of great story about the school. Mind you she has sweatshirts from UVA, UNC, Georgetown and Duke and no one has stopped her with any of those sweatshirts on. A funny/odd story I know but it tells me a lot of good about the alumni connection to Davidson.

That’s a great story and good to hear - thank you!

My son is a graduate - living and working in Charlotte - and we have another son there currently. Admittedly, we were Northeast SLAC snobs, and have been very happy with Davidson. Pretty campus, a stone’s throw from an interstate, near a young vibrant (and affordable) city, division 1 sports, engaged faculty, a supportive administration, and small classes. And yes, the Davidson Mafia is alive and well among the alumni.

We have a daughter than went to one of the AWSP LACs, and she is far less connected to her alma mater than our Davidson siblings.

Is Davidson conservative?

Ridiculous. Wake Forest attracts from all over the country, including a large number of students from DMV, NY (including NJ and Conn) and Chicago. A large number of students are very wealthy but it is not a southern girl school. Not sure if Davidson is but I doubt it. Wake is more Stone Ridge uppity but not debutante. The kids tend to be attractive (ha, ha, Bachelor contestants) and that adds to competitiveness much like Alabama, Tennessee, LSU, but again different dynamics than Old South, which Wake is not.
