Great! And everyone agrees that parents should have a CHOICE. Any parent who wants to choose DL for their child should have that option.

Any parent who chooses in person should have to quarantine their family for a month prior to school starting and agree to a strict quarantine and weekly covid tests for all family members. And, if their teacher gets sick, volunteer for a month to be a substitute.

And, pay into medical and lost pay and long term impact for teachers and school staff.

The teachers should have been offered something like in-person for the traditional school year vs year round DL at the same pay. The parents should have been offered in-person with higher taxes vs DL with current taxes.

Last spring, I provided as much instruction as MCPS would allow. I offered to do additional live Zooms that were purely optional, but my principal said I could not because they conflicted with times that students were supposed to be at lunch or allow siblings to use a shared device. The other option was to offer these supplementary Zooms after 4 pm when my own family needed me.

And I was working until 11:00pm every night for my job because I had to spend my days teaching my children since their teachers weren’t.

Does that mean that you are fair and accurate when you accuse every teacher of being lazy last spring?

I am not accusing every teacher of being lazy. I am trying to point out to this teacher that it’s great that she had a choice to stop her work day at 4pm but she needs to realize that these choices had consequences for parents. It would be nice if even one of these privileged teachers could be the tiniest bit apologetic to parents. Evidently no one else but teachers have to balance work and family.

If a teacher has to be available during their regular hours, and they have children they need to attend to after that, they’re also supposed to be available for you at all hours? Why should they apologize for drawing a line between their work and their families?

+1. Do people actually mean or really think what they are saying? Do people run to a store after hours and demand them to open up? Geez.

What were regular hours during DL for teachers? They were a fraction of what they were. Why couldn’t the teacher attend to her kids when the principal said no classes due to lunch and conflicts with other classes?

Some teachers had ES and secondary age kids of their own who had classes during the opposite time that the teacher was in Zoom. Plus, most people feed their children dinner after 4 pm. It’s not really reasonable to expect that teachers have optional Zoom classes during evening hours when their own families and students’ families might have only that time together to talk. It would be unfair to both students and the teachers’ children. I feel like I can already read the angry posts on DCUM from parents enraged that a teacher was inconsiderate and held Zoom during dinner time.

Not every parents should be a sub. Some are clearly mean and selfish people that children should not be exposed to.

Are you kidding me? You want the crazy “pro-F2F, COVID-19 is a hoax, kids won’t get sick/die from coronavirus” parents to be a substitute teacher?

Of course we aren’t. Best thing we can do is set up homeschooling pods. Put these lazy teachers out of a job.

Do you do that for the target workers, grocery store cashiers, mailman, police officers, etc...

4% of teachers voted for in person; 93% for virtual and 1% hybrid
58% of parents voted for in person; 27% virtual and 1% hybrid
50% of students voted for in person; 17% voted for virtual and 0% hybrid

*These numbers don't add up to 100% because some people just responded with other questions or alternative propossals.

There is a Maryland Board of Education Meeting on Tuesday - you can submit comments in advance and also call. in The counties plans are NOT finalized. Make your voices heard, however you feel.

Fortunately this is a public health issue not a popularity contest.

Perfect response.

I used to think that US citizens are very reasonable, educated and caring/generous people until this pandemic hit. So sad.

They don’t seem to care for anyone other than their own and have no problems risking other people’s life for pushing F2F schooling, and not wearing masks. I still can’t comprehend what happened to my beloved country.

Well they do pay for teachers' benefits through their taxes. Sounds like you believe there should be an extra fee for in person.

I think the federal government should finally take responsibility for this pandemic. Parents should stop hating teachers and teachers should stop hating parents. And no, don't wait for the other person to go first.
Ffs. People are upset because our leaders have put us in an impossible position. Be upset at them, register for your mail-in ballots now and vote.

It's actually not okay that these people are dying and totally reasonable for teachers to advocate for themselves.

This is a public health issue, not a matter for teachers, parents, or students to decide.

It isn't safe in MD right now to be opening schools. Or malls. Or bars. Or restaurants. NONE of this should be happening.

Check out www.globalepidemics.org

The state of Maryland has MANY counties in the "orange" danger zone; some of the most populous are close to the red zone. We have no counties in the green zone. Talbot and Baltimore both moves up to red status today I think.

Counties in the orange and red zones should have stay at home orders in place.

Onlu counties in the green zone should attempt to reopen schools, in person. Or open malls, bars or restaurants.

The sooner we all start demanding to live in "green" zones, the sooner politicians will agree and we can have our lives back. If we keep demanding schools, malls, bars, restaurants, trampoline places reopen without considering rate of spread, we are doomed to keep repeating the mistakes of the spring.
