My kid is going into K and she did DL this spring. While it wasn’t easy and definitely not as good as full time school, she really enjoyed the lessons from her classroom teachers and the specials teachers. We worked a lot at home on reading and math, and I saw a huge growth in her reading ability in particular during DL. The app the school used was really good too.
I know it’s different for kids who have never met their teachers but I think distance learning can work for ECE, although in person is definitely far better. |

My kid actually did fine with PK4 DL, but the content was way too easy (my kid was already somewhat ahead — not out of the ordinary — and our school’s edict about no new content therefore meant all of the DL was review or really, really review. (I mean, in general, the PK3/PK4 packets were ludicrous for the vast majority of kids in March of their PK4 year. One set of them was flash cards for capital letters. There were zero kids in my DD’s T1 class that didn’t know their capital letters.)
I’m a bit more optimistic that the content of PK3 DL would be on target for DS #2 and, though it will require some work on our end to get him used to the technology (has done a few FaceTimes, but has never used Zoom or any technology beyond an iPhone/kids kindle), I think he could get used to it. He’s super excited about the idea of school, so if it’s packets that are just crappy workbook equivalents, it will be pretty sad. |

Don’t worry, they won’t abandon ps/pk. DCPS has received a lot of public backlash for their no DL decision. I guarantee there will be DL, unless hybrid is an option, they will likely stick to hybrid only if it’s an option.
I think also many ECE teachers have expressed that they believe their decision to be ludicrous (unless hybrid is being offered). DCPS puts stock into ECE that’s part of the reason why they withdrew from head start instead of letting them slap DCPS on the hand and lose funding for a longer time. They won’t abandon ECE they are trying to figure out how to best serve them during this time. Maybe they wanted to utilize ECE teachers for something else as well (idk) but it’s become clear ECE teachers aren’t interested and they will not try and force professionals to do something they think will be a bad idea. |
DCPS doesn’t even have a full DL curriculum for K-12 yet even. That is higher priority. ECE which is more about social emotional and learning the alphabet (which parents can easily do at home) is last on the list of grades who need DL. I doubt they will have ECE DL just like they said. Fact is they are scrambling now to get DL up and going. |
I think you haven’t been in DCPS too long. They absolutely view ECE as a priority, as it should be. And believe me if you think ECE is just the ‘alphabet’ and ‘SEL’ you’ve never stepped into a quality ECE classroom. ECE lays the groundwork for the future and there is plenty of data to show children who don’t attend ps/pk are far behind their peers. I spoke to Cheryl Ohlson (deputy chief of ECE) and they are definitely considering DL options for ECE. I’m not sure why you think K-12 is a priority just because children are mandated to go. But perhaps my view is different because I am a self-contained ECE teacher and my students IEPs are also protected by law (since that issue seems to be so important to some people). |
Also to my understanding it’s not a ‘DL curriculum’ for k-12, they are simply converting what we already use to a more palatable format for DL. Which also takes time but DCPS hired 120+ people to do this. |

DCPS said that there will be no DL for ECE if it’s all DL. Period. So I suggest parents with kids in ECE in the fall plan for that.
All these posters who are saying there is going to be DL are pulling crap out of their ass. If DCPS hasn’t said it then it’s not going to happen. |
We’ll see July 31st. If there’s no hybrid DCPS will change their mind. Of course I could be wrong but let’s just say I have a feeling... Especially if your child has special needs. |
You can throw the ECE as a priority out the window during a pandemic. Reality is they are more worried about older kids where it will be much more difficult to catch up once so far behind. |
The discussion here is not about special need kids. It’s ECE in general. |
I said especially not only, thanks. |
We shall see July 31st. |
| PreK kids could get some value out of a daily 15 minute morning meeting plus a few 15-20 minute 1:1 sessions with the teacher each week. |
You obviously didn't join the town halls they had last week. They are seriously considering DL for ECE (aka PK). Parents let them know loud and clear it's something they wanted. Always a joy when people are loud, rude and misinformed. |
| They don’t want to offer a DL option if hybrid is available for PK. They obviously made that (in my mind, totally reasonable; no one has to send their kid to PK and DL sucks for most PK kids) decision when they thought hybrid was the answer. They never intended no school at all to be the option awaiting PKers. |
