Don’t worry, they won’t abandon ps/pk. DCPS has received a lot of public backlash for their no DL decision. I guarantee there will be DL, unless hybrid is an option, they will likely stick to hybrid only if it’s an option. I think also many ECE teachers have expressed that they believe their decision to be ludicrous (unless hybrid is being offered). DCPS puts stock into ECE that’s part of the reason why they withdrew from head start instead of letting them slap DCPS on the hand and lose funding for a longer time. They won’t abandon ECE they are trying to figure out how to best serve them during this time. Maybe they wanted to utilize ECE teachers for something else as well (idk) but it’s become clear ECE teachers aren’t interested and they will not try and force professionals to do something they think will be a bad idea.
DCPS doesn’t even have a full DL curriculum for K-12 yet even. That is higher priority. ECE which is more about social emotional and learning the alphabet (which parents can easily do at home) is last on the list of grades who need DL. I doubt they will have ECE DL just like they said. Fact is they are scrambling now to get DL up and going.
I think you haven’t been in DCPS too long. They absolutely view ECE as a priority, as it should be. And believe me if you think ECE is just the ‘alphabet’ and ‘SEL’ you’ve never stepped into a quality ECE classroom. ECE lays the groundwork for the future and there is plenty of data to show children who don’t attend ps/pk are far behind their peers. I spoke to Cheryl Ohlson (deputy chief of ECE) and they are definitely considering DL options for ECE. I’m not sure why you think K-12 is a priority just because children are mandated to go. But perhaps my view is different because I am a self-contained ECE teacher and my students IEPs are also protected by law (since that issue seems to be so important to some people).
