How do you deal with people stealing from your food garden?

Mulberries are fine too eat as there is so much fruit and most people don’t eat them here

Are you Asian? I had a couple of Asian neighbors get in a fight over the fruit on a tree. I think the police were called.

When I lived in Germany, a German friend told me that if the limb is hanging over the walk/street, it is okay to take the fruit. But, it is not okay to step into the yard. I never tried either. I buy my fruit.

Sprinkle really hot pepper flakes on the berries.

this would be fun hook a video up as well.

but how about wait for them and next time, show them how to pull the berries with out damaging the plant. Ie turn it into a learning experience..

Better yet, how about the mom teaches them as out staying off others’ property.

Right? What is with the current trend of not respecting private property if it’s because the kids are young? People have no issues with picking berries, cutting through yards, climbing trees, not following house rules? Then if the neighbor has a problem with it the neighbor is the one who is wrong? I don’t get it.

+1. My elderly mom is dealing with this issue now. A new neighbor decided it was fine for her 10 year old DS to ride his bike and scooter on my mom’s driveway. Kid smacked into her garage while on his scooter. My mom heard the sound and came out to investigate. Kid was not hurt. My mom told him that this is her driveway and he is not allowed to play on her driveway or in her yard.

Kid ran home and my mom got an email from his angry mom saying that 1) her child is to be respected and spoken to in a calm voice and 2) my mom is never, ever to speak to her DC ever

I counseled my mom through this and told her that unfortunately this new entitlement is more common than ever.

PickIng up berries Off sidewalk is one thing, but Picking up berries On other people yard on top of their driveway is trespass.
If the mom thinks other people’s driveway is a public playground for their kids, there isn't much you can do. You can publicly shame the family by posting a picture, or use a yellow tape to block your driveway.
People in our nextdoor Forum want others to stop calling police bc police may harm the suspected intruder.

We have neighbors like that. Email her back saying her child doesn't have permission to play in her yard and you will send a bill for the damage to the garage.

In fact, the mom is walking them back from the dwtn SS Whole Foods with bags of groceries when they are raiding my garden. I’ve spoken to them twice already. I don’t want to call the police so I was thinking some type of netting fastened around the plants. An actual fence is not an option.

"I’ve spoken to them twice already." OP, do you mean the kids or the mom? If you haven't spoken to the mom yet, talking to her may help.

NP here. I called PD on my adult neighbors who were trespassing and damaging my peace and property. Patience is limited.
