Racist Graffiti at Whitman

The kid who was making phone threats to synagogues in MoCo a few years ago, was going to be an Israeli teen.

There was graffiti on our local synagogue and it turned out that one of the people involved had a mom who worked at the synagogue.

I think they need to prosecute these as harsher simply because it’s vandalism. Focus on the fact that you shouldn’t destroy someone else’s property. No matter what you’re writing.

Yeah, but it’s upsetting to the community nonetheless. Many people dismissed the phone threats as not a big deal because apparently the kid wasn’t actually going to carry it out, but as someone who took my daughter to swim lessons at the Rockville JCC (which had one of the threats) it was really scary nonetheless.

Same thing if a kid spraypaints noose on a wall. Were they going to lynch a black student? Almost certainly not. Is it still very upsetting and contributes to making black students feel unwelcome? Yes.

My kid attends a Jewish school. I remember this well. Yes, it was very upsetting.

It was also much less upsetting when it turned out that the kids was Israeli.

Does it make it less hateful if the kid was Israeli?

It does to me.

An Israeli Jewish kid spewing anti-Semitic nonsense seems less scary than a KKK kid spewing it.

Either way, it’s wrong, but there is a difference.

Personally, I’d prefer the focus to be on anyone of any race/religion NOT making hateful or threatening phone calls to others. Same here, with the graffiti. It’s wrong, no matter who did it and no matter what it said.

I live in the Whitman district and kids are BORED right now. There was no mall or movies open and they have nothing better to do with their time.

We had a bunch of kids driving through our neighborhood and smashing mailboxes with a baseball bat -- bored kids.

I think the ones trying to dissuade us from thinking it was Whitman students ARE the Whitman parents.

Do you mean to say you condone what happened because it was just an ordinary day for your family? My Senior graduated on that day and in the virtual graduation I saw pictures of a number of AA and students from African countries (they may or may not be naturalized citizens of the USA) in the video as their names were read out in the background. Any human being of decent moral character would be appalled by the said graffiti.

My post was inferring that just because it was a day of celebration for seniors, doesn't mean that every person that goes to Whitman was "celebrating" that day.

For many, it was just another day, so the fact that seniors were celebrating has no basis on whether some other kids from the school may have vandalized it.

Where did you come up with the ridiculous notion that I don't condone what happened or don't find it abhorrent, just because I made the comment that graduation day wasn't necessarily a celebratory day for all students of Whitman??

Seriously???? Stop justifying this type of behavior as BORED kids. These are people who are 16yrs old or more. They know right from wrong (or at least they should). IF these kids were arrested and prosecuted for Vandalism, then parents would be talking about their poor little darlings and how this marks on the record could affect their future. Kids are bored everywhere, but the greater majority aren’t defacing or being destructive towards property or inciting unnecessary terror.

The vast majority of Whitman/W families are overwhelmingly liberal when it comes to embracing the differences of others. They may be a little tone deaf, or lacking empathy, but very few W families make judgments based on race or other different identities. Other schools in the county - not so much. I have seen students hurl racial insults at Asian building service workers at a school in Germantown. I’ve seen LGBT kids be hideously tortured at a school in Olney. Black vs Hispanic group arguments break out in many schools throughout the county. Let’s not even start on Damascus or Poolesville.

Racial and other injustice runs rampant all over Montgomery County. It’s not concentrated (or even particularly worse) in W areas. Yes, those communities have some growing to do but to continually blame them for enabling racism is a little detached from reality.

There were three tragic stories of kids committing suicide last week in MCPS. THREE kids! That is horrible.
