If your "safety school" was also your first choice or close to first, what was it?

My dd is a rising freshman and super happy with her choice. It was her first choice all the way through the process. She has already met a ton of kids and they have zoom calls etc. Good luck to your dd!

WVU - he got accepted into higher rated/lower acceptance schools, but he’s thrilled to go to WVU, and received a really good merit aid package.

VT engineering was my first choice, waitlisted, enrolled in CC for 1 year, then went to VT. At the time I was embarrassed, but it was the best decision looking back on it.

Funny that the “safety school” for some of these people just happened to be Michigan, NYU, or Northwestern. None of these are safeties, even for people applying only to Yale, MIT, and Stanford. Matches, maybe, but not safeties.(Mine was in this boat and her safeties were Wisconsin, UCSB, and UIUC. Michigan and NYU were sort of matches but still wild cards. None of her 3 safeties was among her actual favorites, but all are excellent schools and she could probably have been happy at any.)

I agree with the prior post but Michigan can still be pretty safe for some Michigan residents. For a while, Michigan focused almost exclusively on grades and SAT scores so even out of state applicants could be pretty sure they would get in if their numbers were high enough. Nowadays Michigan is more selective, more focused on yield, and more "holistic" in its evaluation of applications, which makes decisions less predictable.

People should post honest answers.

If your kid went to high school in Grand Rapids, has a 36 on the ACT and a 4.0 GPA, Michigan would seem pretty safe, even if the same would not be true for a kid in Rockville with those numbers.

Not true, have children at PS. Summer session students are counted as “rejected” for the fall, and almost all students at branches end up on main campus. 50% of main campus students started somewhere else. It’s a great school for average to good high school students! But it’s not selective, and it’s not supposed to be—selectivity is just not their mission.

Started out as a safety...he got into 7 schools in total...and chose Juniata. So far, it is working out very well. So, it seems like he was onto something (i.e. fit).

Similar situation with my kid, but another PA school: Muhlenberg. DC put it near the top of the list from the get-go, even knowing it was a safety.
