why can't teachers just wear masks in the fall?

I am suctioning them, their respiratory secretions are spewing around the room, etc.
I get one per week.
We do patient rounds in them---I talk to a dozen coworkers in a crowded hallway or conference room.

Surely we could spend $25 per year per teacher to buy them 50 of them? for the year?

LOL sure you're taking care of patients in a mask that's listed under the eye makeup category on Amazon, ships from China with an expected delivery time of over a month, and has a broken English description. Buy this product from U2C store, otherwise the mask quality WOULD NOT be garranted!

Based on how long it takes me to train them to cover their coughs and sneezes, most parents don’t bother requiring their children to do so they will be coughing and sneezing and wiping boogers all over their other classmates. I know they aren’t getting as sick as adults, but surely they will bring this home to grandma.

I miss my students, I want my own kids to go back to school, I’m all for starting in the fall with precautionary measures, but I don’t think it’ll work. We are going to see a huge huge spike in cases in the fall and will have to shut down again.!

NO, the TEACHERS wear the mask, the kids don't.

Just like--THE NURSES wear the masks. Patients don't wear masks!

Well what’s the point of that? How will it slow down the transmission if only a small fraction of the people in a building wear masks?

Patients do wear masks. A relative went to the ER in February, at the beginning of all this, for a non-Covid medical issue, the first thing they did was give her a mask to put on.

I think this picture demonstrates that patients do wear masks, although some other people who are above us all don't wear masks.

Most of our coworkers have kids as we do too. Many of us do have various health concerns.

We have worn masks religiously since this started. Sometimes we wear a N95 and more recently we wear surgical masks. We wear them non-stop for 12 hour shifts.

It's not fun (the masks are hot, it's a pain) but we've worn them each and every day for almost 2 months. Why can't teachers do this?

We can. Who said teachers can't wear masks in the fall?

I think the OP’s point is that there is no reason for schools to be shut down now. Teachers could wear masks and be teaching with low risk.

This isn’t the reason schools are shut. They are shut for the same reasons every other place is shut.

Put them in masks and send them back. Our healthcare providers are taking care of actual Covid patients wearing 50 cents masks for a week. Teachers have a MUCH MUCH lower risk of contracting Covid.

I don't know why there is even a question of sending teachers back.

I don't think there is. I think the issue is that it's impossible for kids to socially distance in a school. It's the same with colleges reopening. The reluctance of reopening colleges isn't to protect the professors.

Colleges are completely different, because students live together in close quarters.

Yes, but kids ride the bus, and spend the day in close quarters with each other. Plus it’s extremely likely that they would stay 6ft apart from each other even if schools could configure it.

Yes, we do patient rounds on them every day.

That’s very different. Patient rounds involves asking questions and listening. Teachers are constantly talking.

OP. I’m not sure why you think schools are closed for the protection of the teachers Do you think restaurants are closed for the safety of the wait staff?

So does everyone doctor and nurse I know. Do you think anyone likes wearing a mask? NO. but they suck and up and do it for their job.

Nurses and doctors are health care professionals. I dont think just because you do it should make teachers do it.

And i am so sick of the phase suck it up. No, I will NOT.

Huh? I'm a teacher, I do plenty of asking questions and listening.

I think that OP is nuts, but she's not wrong about that.

Yep. The teachers should be worried about getting it from students. Parents should be worried about their child bringing it home to at risk household members. Only teachers wearing masks does nothing.

I also work in healthcare and know dozens upon dozens of people who also work in healthcare. I don't understand the question. Are you talking about right now? Or months from now?

I feel badly for the situation teachers are facing, but unfortunately, they just aren’t living in reality. A world where school administrations won’t protect teachers from out-of-control children isn’t about to shut down schools so that teachers won’t be exposed to the same germs the rest of the public will get upon reopening. They’re just going to replace the teachers who won’t suck it up with all the graduates who need work. It sucks but that’s life in a pandemic with broke economy.

I have two hearing impaired students this year. While I won’t teach them next year someone else will as well as the many other DHOH students in inclusion classes. While only some lip read, others who have partial hearing will lose quality of sound when the teacher wears a mask. Try using your phone while wearing a mask or participating in Zoom that way.

I think PP means talking to someone for 15-20 min in a 12 inch voice rather than 40-45 in a room-sized voice. Think about how your throat feels at the end of the first week of school.

Paid better than most who? Most people with a college degree make more than teachers.

I am not a teacher. I agree with you that teachers don’t need to suck it up. Not sure why parents are taking their frustrations out on teachers. People don’t have to risk their health and safety to teach your kid. If this is a window into how parents generally treat teachers I am DISGUSTED. The entitlement is stereotypical and nauseating. Gross.
