why can't teachers just wear masks in the fall?

Anonymous
I teach preschool students. I’m happy to wear a mask. But do you think they will keep them on?! Based on how long it takes me to train them to cover their coughs and sneezes, most parents don’t bother requiring their children to do so they will be coughing and sneezing and wiping boogers all over their other classmates. I know they aren’t getting as sick as adults, but surely they will bring this home to grandma.

I miss my students, I want my own kids to go back to school, I’m all for starting in the fall with precautionary measures, but I don’t think it’ll work. We are going to see a huge huge spike in cases in the fall and will have to shut down again.!

Put them in masks and send them back. Our healthcare providers are taking care of actual Covid patients wearing 50 cents masks for a week. Teachers have a MUCH MUCH lower risk of contracting Covid.

I don't know why there is even a question of sending teachers back.

Are you in a decision making position? I’m going to guess no.

NO, the TEACHERS wear the mask, the kids don't.

Just like--THE NURSES wear the masks. Patients don't wear masks!

I was wondering the same. Did somebody say we can’t wear masks?

I'm a teacher, and I'm very happy to wear a mask. That is true for all the teachers I know.

Gosh I can see why you're a preschool teacher. Critical thinking is not your strong suit.

You wear the mask, not your students!

Do you think patients with Covid are wearing masks when they have breathing difficulties? NO, doctors and nurses are wearing the masks.

Most of our coworkers have kids as we do too. Many of us do have various health concerns.

We have worn masks religiously since this started. Sometimes we wear a N95 and more recently we wear surgical masks. We wear them non-stop for 12 hour shifts.

It's not fun (the masks are hot, it's a pain) but we've worn them each and every day for almost 2 months. Why can't teachers do this?

We can. Who said teachers can't wear masks in the fall?

Teachers and kids can wear masks but I have trouble wearing one for more than 15 minutes. Teachers are special and want to scream low pay when here they are paid more than most. They need to do a better curriculum if this continues online.

But the teachers are much more likely to get sick than the students, and the masks don’t protect them, they protect other people.

I am suctioning them, their respiratory secretions are spewing around the room, etc.
I get one per week.
We do patient rounds in them---I talk to a dozen coworkers in a crowded hallway or conference room.

Surely we could spend $25 per year per teacher to buy them 50 of them? for the year?

How can your hospital possibly justify giving you one of those per week, if they're that easily available? I feel like I am missing something.

I'm a parent of a kid with a trach and a vent, so I know all about respiratory secretions spewing. The idea that you'd wear the same PPE from my kid, to someone else, or vice versa, when the hospital could pay $0.50 to prevent it is mind boggling.

I don't think there is. I think the issue is that it's impossible for kids to socially distance in a school. It's the same with colleges reopening. The reluctance of reopening colleges isn't to protect the professors.

...I doubt you are a nurse. Seriously. Are you proposing that the teachers wear masks and the little ones will just do as usual..rubbing boogers all over each other to bring it home to mom, dad and grandma?
