why can't teachers just wear masks in the fall?

I was wondering the same. Did somebody say we can’t wear masks?

I'm a teacher, and I'm very happy to wear a mask. That is true for all the teachers I know.
Same here.

Most of our coworkers have kids as we do too. Many of us do have various health concerns.

We have worn masks religiously since this started. Sometimes we wear a N95 and more recently we wear surgical masks. We wear them non-stop for 12 hour shifts.

It's not fun (the masks are hot, it's a pain) but we've worn them each and every day for almost 2 months. Why can't teachers do this?

We can. Who said teachers can't wear masks in the fall?

I think the OP’s point is that there is no reason for schools to be shut down now. Teachers could wear masks and be teaching with low risk.

You're accusing other people of being maximally hysterical?

Haven’t we been seeing all over the news that surgical masks do little to protect the wearer?

No to mention that one person wearing a mask in a group of 30 people doesn't do a lot to protect the other 29.

I am suctioning them, their respiratory secretions are spewing around the room, etc.
I get one per week.
We do patient rounds in them---I talk to a dozen coworkers in a crowded hallway or conference room.

Surely we could spend $25 per year per teacher to buy them 50 of them? for the year?

Your patients aren't going home to spread the disease. Guys, this person is a troll.....

huh, yes they are. Do you think they're only discharged home when their tests are negative?

Put them in masks and send them back. Our healthcare providers are taking care of actual Covid patients wearing 50 cents masks for a week. Teachers have a MUCH MUCH lower risk of contracting Covid.

I don't know why there is even a question of sending teachers back.

I don't think there is. I think the issue is that it's impossible for kids to socially distance in a school. It's the same with colleges reopening. The reluctance of reopening colleges isn't to protect the professors.

Colleges are completely different, because students live together in close quarters.

I’m so sick people asserting that since nurses do something, then teachers should do the same. It’s a false equivalency. The job of a nurse is to provide care to sick or injured people. They are fully aware of what they’re signing up for when they decide to go to school to become a nurse. They are aware that they will be on the front lines in the event of a pandemic or whatever health issue people are facing. Same with EMTs/firefighters/police officers etc. They are first responders. It’s in the job description that they will be putting themselves in danger and they knowingly sign up for that.

In what world are teachers in the same category as the aforementioned? No one gets an education degree assuming they will have to teach germy children in a pandemic. Let’s keep it real here. No one would care this much or be this opinionated about how teachers do their job in a pandemic if they weren’t just upset that they lost their free childcare. That’s what this is about.

And with this post, I’m out. I’m not even a teacher but I’m so so done with these threads and the teacher bashing that goes on here. It’s gross and reveals how disgusting most of humanity is when people don’t have control over a situation and would prefer for others (who didn’t sign up for it), plus their own children, to put their health at risk so that they don’t have to be inconvenienced in any way.

Good luck, all. I hope you get some perspective one day. You sorely need it.

I assume teachers will mostly wear masks when they eventually go back? And also assume students will be wearing masks as well. Not sure what OPs problem is.

If only teachers are wearing masks, it's pointless. You're protected from the teachers' germs, but no one is protected from the germs of the hundreds of children. Teachers and kids will get sick fairly quickly in that situation. How is this difficult to understand??

Based on how long it takes me to train them to cover their coughs and sneezes, most parents don’t bother requiring their children to do so they will be coughing and sneezing and wiping boogers all over their other classmates. I know they aren’t getting as sick as adults, but surely they will bring this home to grandma.

I miss my students, I want my own kids to go back to school, I’m all for starting in the fall with precautionary measures, but I don’t think it’ll work. We are going to see a huge huge spike in cases in the fall and will have to shut down again.!

Gosh I can see why you're a preschool teacher. Critical thinking is not your strong suit.

You wear the mask, not your students!

Do you think patients with Covid are wearing masks when they have breathing difficulties? NO, doctors and nurses are wearing the masks.

Gosh, are you always so dismissive and mean? I have plenty of critical thinking skills. And if you think being a preschool teacher is easy and doesn’t require brains and skills, then I invite you to teach for a week and report back how “easy” it is to manage behavior, educate, keep kids safe, and have fun.

As I said, I’m happy to wear a mask. A mask protects me from potentially spreading the virus, but doesn’t protect me from getting the virus. I’m talking about kids wearing masks because that is what many many districts are talking about, and what my colleagues in staff meetings have been discussing while we have been locked down. I work with adults who are older and/or have underlying conditions. Healthy adults are having strokes out of nowhere due to this virus. So yes kids have the potential to spread the virus and that’s why they’re wearing masks in other countries and why it’s being discussed now.

It’s not a question of not reopening schools specifically to protect teachers. It’s about having large groups of people together where it’s impossible to socially distance. Kids could pick up the virus from other kids and go home and infect people.

Another teacher here. I think all of us assume we will be wearing them. What’s the point? The students will be protected from us.

The only thing debated is that some people feel all students must wear masks. That would be impossible to enforce. They are more likely to spread germs and diseases to each other than get sick from the teacher.

NO, the TEACHERS wear the mask, the kids don't.

Just like--THE NURSES wear the masks. Patients don't wear masks!

Well what’s the point of that? How will it slow down the transmission if only a small fraction of the people in a building wear masks?

Kids wear shirts to school, wear pants and shoes. They'll wear masks too. Probably not N95 masks but masks.
