Tulane

Every child we’ve known who has chosen Tulane is looking for the fun, party scene first and solid academics second. They are certainly solid students, but they are partying extroverts above all else. Let’s call a spade a spade.

Major party school.

So they have fun and get a good education. Sounds like a smart move.

The above is our experience as well. Those we know who choose Tulane are all decent students. None are top of their class, but all take academics seriously. However they universally choose Tulane because they know of its party environment. I suppose there is no harm; until your child comes home a substance abuser.

Yes. Good thing other schools don’t have drugs. These observations say more about PPs circle of acquaintances than anything else.

Does the school "feel Southern"?

Oh, please. Based on reports from my friends, I’d be much more concerned about substance abuse at a high-stress school in the middle of nowhere. I have a friend who left a highly-ranked school because “all anyone did was sit in their room and drink.” I’ll take “out on the town and drinking” any day.

Lol. I went to Brown and had never seen that type of drug use in my life. Then I worked on Wall Street for a few years and, well, let’s just say I felt out of place as someone who *didnt* have substance abuse issues.

My DS is a junior and is very interested in Tulane. I keep reading that Tulane wants applicants to really show interest in the school in order to be accepted, especially EA. What does that actually mean? Thanks.

Yes, but everyone does this, so it won't make you stand out.

It's yield protection. All the southerns schools do it and are fixated on it.

Visiting Tulane is actually quite a haul. A long way and not cheap.

That's what I told my DD who was accepted. I'm excited for her. I went to a pressure cooker school for undergrad and an even tougher law school. I had no fun and ulcers. My DD is academically inclined enough that she will be responsible and do her work, and throw herself into it. She likes being a good student. But she also wants a social life and to some fun.

She'll be able to do both at Tulane.

I'm dancing around for her instead of wishing for her what I endured.

They are doing literally dozens of virtual events this year. Once you get on their mailing list you’ll have lots of opportunity to show your interest.
