Our family is terrified of colleges surrounded by cornfields.
Urban it is! Different strokes, folks.

Vaguely, just googled it. Haha, tinfoil hats. I'm also terrified of deep woods. I have PTSD from a road trip with my best friend and her parents in PA. I was a city kid, fell asleep with my head on friends lap. She startled me awake and I sat up, looked out window and there was a clearing in woods -- fire and people standing in a circle (kids too). I just searched wickens in Villanova. DS shotgunning RD. 😬

We have met many alumni. I don't think they generally practice voodoo on campus - crazy stuff happens everywhere, and based on statistics, getting murdered by something like the Manson family or a serial killer could happen anywhere - Chicago, LA, Minnesota, Pacific NW, Miami. I understand the bad vibe from that experience, and if I had been next door to a murder in any city, I would probably not want to return, nor have my kids return for any reason. Tulane is a great school, with happy kids, where -- like at any school -- some of whom drink and some don't. They do not have a larger problem with alcohol than any other school including UVA, Georgetown, and UMD, just to pick a few from the DMV. Better to have an interesting city with a lot of fun festivals and music than to be stuck at a boring SLAC where there is nothing to do in the winter besides drink ...

Best of luck to your DD! I went to Tulane and loved every minute of it. New Orleans has a vibrant rich culture that any young adult would be lucky to live and learn in. I'll take my chances with black magic rituals any day over bored bros in a cornfield. I would definitely consider Tulane for my kids.

Your DD has nice stats and would be a definite admit ED, sans merit aid. Not high enough for merit aid either ED or RD. Still, worth getting loans to get the Tulane experience.

PP here - thanks. Frankly, such a shame - I realize Tulane is very well regarded, etc., but my DD, who literally has never had a B grade and has a weighted 4.6 GPA, with a 33 ACT that literally puts her in the 95th percentile of test takers...can't be expected to receive any merit aid.

Visi has also "discovered" Tulane.

So has Sidwell. It's a favorite of the middle percentile. 7 kids from class of 2020

Don’t listen to them.

I am the ritual killing poster. DD had the same GPA (4.0/4.6) and was offered 30k merit. Your DD worked hard anc I’m sure Tulane will see that.

Tons of drugs 15 years ago.

Can’t imagine it’s gotten better since then.

The administration kept a lawyer on retainer to help kids who got arrested by the NOLA police. (Freddie King)

So, keep that all in mind.

And yet, most of us who went there will cherish every moment we spent there because it was a great city to be in during (IMO) the most beautiful time of your life. I'm not the PP who said they loved every moment at Tulane but I couldn't agree more...
Although it definitely is not for everyone. I grew up in NYC and wanted to be in a big city for college. I already knew how to handle myself in seedy places.

PP is just showing they don’t know anything about what scores get what. So ignorant.

Seems like Tulane and NYU have become the new favorites for a lot of kids.

NP. DH went in the 80's, loved it, and survived. Went to a far less fun graduate school.

It's as if the college counselors at these fancy privates have huddled and decided to pitch Tulane as the "it" school for the kids who otherwise can't stretch enough for that reach school. Kinda of a win-win. The families are sastisfied. Tulane gets full freight kids with connections galore.

Maybe. But more likely it is a recognition that the school has improved and also has a lot of different options that are not present at all schools (e.g., business school, teaching). And it has merit/tuition discounts.

Timely topic as our DC is seeing many of their friends sharing Tulane ED admissions. Every child we’ve known who has chosen Tulane is looking for the fun, party scene first and solid academics second. They are certainly solid students, but they are partying extroverts above all else. Let’s call a spade a spade.
