DC getting massively shortchanged in coronavirus bill by R Sens. DC needs to be a state.

Deal?

This.

It will turn DC into a Hong Kong like haven, but screw it, why should we be shortchanged like this.

DC has a larger population than a few states and pays more in federal taxes than 22 states. What is your point? Land doesn't vote, people do.

You chose to live there and you continue to choose to live there. The best DC can hope for is retrocession by Maryland. Outside of that, you know you aren’t treated the same as a state and if you want that same treatment move to Maryland or DC. It’s as simple as that.

For the past several decades the Congress has treated DC like a state when it comes to budget allocations. That's what makes this bill so unusual.

It has a bigger population than several states and more covid cases than many states.

And DC pays WAY more in tax dollars per capita than many states. And it gets FAR less from the federal government, with this coronavirus bill a great example.

Imagine if San Francisco or Charleston, SC was cut off from a state and in this weird 'district' situation where:
- 700,000 people lived there
- the economy was very strong due to being both a govt and creative center with tech and legal services and journalism and research hospitals and universities
- due to the strong economy, residents paid high taxes
BUT
- they had no senators or reps to advocate for them
- due to no senators or reps, they continually got screwed and shortchanged by Congress

Imagine if you did that to SF or Charleston right now. People would scream bloody murder, and rightfully so.

It's easy to split DC into a capitol district that includes only federal land, and a real city that includes where everyone lives, which would be greater population than several states. And then make the city a state.

That would be good for the country, and it would be good for DC workers and DC schoolkids. The only people who it would be bad for are Mitch McConnell and his rightwing-billionaire donors, who would lose votes in the Senate. That's why conservatives don't want DC people to have real representation.

There’s a neat, easy and desirable solution. DC should rejoin Maryland. And who wouldn’t rather have a calm, practical and competent leader like Larry Hogan at the helm right now, versus Muriel Bowser?!

Since we all have time on our hands and most of you seem to not know anything about the issues surrounding DC statehood I would like to suggest that you all read the whole thread about it here: https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/829083.page For starters, DC doesn’t want retrocession to Maryland and NEITHER DOES MARYLAND, so it's not a neat, easy or desirable solution. And how this bill treats DC is complete horseshit and not at all how DC has been treated in prior relief bills.

Chocolate City symbolically melted away with Barry. And demographically it’s no more.

Let’s face it. In the DC government, there’s a lack of competence at the top. It’s far below the competency and quality of the Tony Williams administration or even the Fentu administration. The epic fail on Capitol Hill is on Bowser, Norton and their staffs.

DC may no longer be majority black but it is still majority minority.

Instead of just crying “discrimination,” Bowser and her aides have to do their job. Build strong relationships on the Hill, including with staff. Pay attention to what is happening. Stay on top of legislation. Liaise and lobby. And of statehood is the magic elixir, please explain how that is going to get 60 votes in the Senate, even if the Democrats were to win control of both chambers and the White House. I guess we’ll have to wait for all of Bernie’s promised revolutionaries to materialize.

I live in DC and am fine with joining MD or VA if it will get rid of Eleanor Holmes Norton. How in the world does she keep getting elected? Also, my kids go to DCPS and it is a horror show. DC govt. is just way too corrupt and incompetent for my liking. And I’m ultra-liberal but the DC circus is too much even for me

I agree that Bowser is simply not very bright, but if "competence at the top" was the only prerequisite for getting federal aid then more than half the states would not qualify. Have you seen some of the yokels who get elected to high public office in some of these states? I wouldn't trust them to manage a McDonald's.

Last time I checked, all those cities had congressional and senatorial representation. Next?

Yup. Time to petition Maryland for DC to retrocede and rejoin the state. We’d get congressional representation and no need to set up state functions and a bigger bureaucracy (although they may be the objective of some local DC polls and advocates).

State it will not happen people.
