Is DCPS going virtual?

They are trying to get chrome books out to every student that needs one. They are also trying to still have some after school clubs meet virtually. I’m so impressed with what they’ve done so far. Hoping for even more clarity on some things tomorrow.

How are they recording? What platform are they using?

MS Office 365 Teams

Among others. My DC's team sent a really detailed plan with instructions for a variety of platforms. Instructions were clear.

Zearn does math videos better than any teacher could. You should be able to get to Learn on your kid's Clever account. If not, you can make up your own Zearna account as a teacher or a homeschool parent.

The schools are supposed to send an email out today. DCPS policy though seems to be no tech which is unfortunate for the kids. And an anomaly compared with other school districts.

It’s no tech because of equity considerations. Such backward thinking, but par for the course.

This type of thinking and embracement of equity at all cost is why DCPS will never succeed to attract higher performing students and they leave for charters, burbs, or privates.

This unveiled threat by middle class whites to leave DC is getting trite. Bye already?

Hate to burst your bubble but many are not leaving DC. They are going charter which BTW ours has already lesson plans set up, virtual meetings with teachers, etc..

That’s great and all but not a comparison to an entire school system when your school can be singled out (i.e Capital City or the likes)

I get that it was spring break last week (and today) and teachers weren't working. But if we have to just do packets next week and we don't get any actual virtual instruction from them, even if just 15 minutes for ELA, math to set up the packet assignments, I am going to lose my s***.

Well donate a laptop and some money for those families who do not have those things.

If the entire class cannot participate, no one should. We have the necessary essentials, but it would not be fair.

You don't need a laptop. You can just use your smartphone...

Received communication from Central Office that any videoconferencing with students must be through Microsoft Teams. Parents are allowed to opt their child out by letting the school principal know.

Not for us. We didn't get notice about the live session; it wasn't emailed. No team email, no team newsletter. My kid has a language class tomorrow and that's it.

Your hard copy learning packets don't impress us. My kid burned through hers for Week 1 in an afternoon. Meanwhile, the humble local parochial school is set up to teach classes on Zoom.[/quot

What was included in your pocket? Ela and math social studies and science? All of that was done in one afternoon? My daughter is in 5th but the ELA had a lot of writing involved. However, my daughter's teacher gave them a separate packet to do instead which also has a lot of writing. Math is just online stuff. Seems that everyone is getting something different in DCPS.

Mine, too. What school? But, the teachers said to reach out with questions.

Oh wait—- FAirfax & Moco have sent nothing. No tele teaching. Quick- find a new reason to shake your fists!!!!

Not true. MD/VA burbs sent out grade level packets created by their central office teams not by teachers so that every grade level has the same information. Judging by this thread, DCPS is a crapshoot depending on your school. People have mentioned that some schools are utilizing technology, while others have a firm no technology guideline in place. I love how liberally minded people pretend to champion equitable practices, until it comes to their progeny, then it’s as long as I get mine first, someone else can be second. #selfish #NOTequitable #DCPS-Equity-sucks

Deal has online teaching, which means west of the Park is using the online Microsoft Platform but the further away a school is from the Park (aka Rock Creek Park) that might not be the case. It also might be the case that only certain school feeder patterns are using online teaching: Deal, Stuart Hobson, JKLM pattern, Banneker, SWS, SWW, Wilson, Cap Hill Montessori

Our EOTR DCPS school is using Microsoft Teams.

We don't have enough 'tech' for everybody to be on tech at the same time - which is what's needed when parents are also working from home.
