Also, the Ken Burns documentary "National Parks: America's Best Idea" changed our whole lives. It will make your kids want to get out there!

Re John Adams; it is interesting but I think only for adults because it's too slow moving and dry for kids. You have to really want to learn your history to watch it. LOL Start with something exciting, OP...start with Sparticus!

Um, no:

We watched John Adams recently and my 12 and 14 year old really liked it.

I will also add...

Charlie Wilson’s War
The autobiography of miss Jane Pittman
A woman called Moses (about Harriet tubman)
Good night and good luck
Looming towers (not for younger kids probably)

Eyes on the prize is wonderful. Don’t think it’s streaming anywhere

My absolutely favorite all time historical series is the Hornblower series. English navy during the Napoleonic wars. The subject may seem dry to you but it's fabulously acted and plotted. If you remember Master and Commander, it's similar. Great battle scenes, plus more. While not as glamorous or fancy (which makes them more realistic in my view) they are superb watching. Eight episodes, each two hours long. Start with one and follow to the end.

Ken Burns are incredible! I've never watched one that I didn't love.

The Roman Mysteries is great. The author of the books on which the series is based is a historian.

For the age of your kids, you can't beat Liberty's Kids. Both my kids loved it and years later still remember a lot of history from it!

With my teens we just watched Turn and it was terrific for sparking interest in the period of the Revolution and looking at it from different angles. Yes, it takes some liberties (and is probably too hard to follow for younger kids) but it really brings the period alive in a way that made our whole family now more interested to learn more.
