I allowed my 10 year old to watch. Rated R means accompanied by a parent or guardian. |
The John Adams series was crushingly dull. |
My son was really into American Revolutionary history when he was that age (8-11), and he really enjoyed the old "Johnny Tremain" and "The Crossing" with Jeff Daniels. |
Drunk History. Quick and interesting and funny to watch. |

Pp that also posted at 15:27. Thanks for this post! I was a double history and art history major with a film studies minor in college and now a teacher. This is just the fun distraction I needed today! Here are more The Patriot (haven’t it since the movie theater. May be too violent for 8 year old) Ghandi Sparticus Ben-Hur Lion in Winter A Man for All Seasons Becket All Quiet on the Western Front Glory King’s Speech The Physician Apollo 13 A Leauge of Their Own Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken (early 90’s kid movie set during great depression) First Knight (complete fiction, but historical setting and ok for an 8 year old) Forest Gump (prob not with an 8 year old) The Last Emperor Cleopatra |
Another vote for Turn. You have to pay attention, but it’s very watchable.
Also Jamestown, although I’m bummed Season 2 is pay on Prime. |
The Men Who Built America
The Food That Built America |
I love turn, but they made a ton of stuff up. It’s not appropriate for the younger kids. |
All the president’s men
|
Both on Prime.
Titanic: blood and steel: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1695366/ Story of the making of titanic. Uses some fictional characters. Titanic: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1869152/?ref_=tt_sims_tt Much better than the rose and jack schlock. |
Actually, while they took some artistic license, they also presented just how complicated that time in American history was. The good guys and bad guys weren’t necessarily all that obvious. I stand by my recommendation, it’s good but you need to pay attention. |
My apologies, the second isn’t on prime, but available for purchase. |
Jamestown on Prime. |
Or actually read history. Simcoe was not like the character on the tv show: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Graves_Simcoe I love the show but trying to learn history from it is like trying to learn history from Reign. |
