Can you tell me about Frederick Maryland + your opinion on this home inside?

Hyattsville (20781) off of Rt. 1 has a mini-downtown area, is diverse and usually there are townhomes available under 425K. Here's one that sold last fall: https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/5609-44th-Ave-Hyattsville-MD-20781/71807496_zpid/

I metro to Dupont and it takes me 35 or 40 minutes door-to-door.

Anonymous wrote:Hi,

I googled "walkable areas in maryland" and Frederick came up as being a mini-DC. (not sure about that-but hey)

Is it diverse (age, ethnicity, etc)? I'm an AA female, single, 38

How are schools? I have a 4 year old son.

How is your commute into DC or other parts close to DC metro? I work in foggy bottom but have telework days so I can work my commute down (no car but would by a car)

I found this home, which is in my budget. Where else can I look to find something similar in this price range(no more than 380k) and "walkable"?

Frederick schools are not great.

Frederick is still super redneck. Try rockville instead.

These are such uninformed opinions. The schools in Urbana are rated as high as Rockville.

Okay so it's redneck in Frederick and murder capital in DC... pick one I guess.

? Rockville, Gaithersburg, nor Germantown -- top diverse small cities in the country -- are not murder capital of DC.

But no, Urbana schools are not rated very high. I think their top ranking school is ranked lower than Sherwood HS in MoCo. Not bashing Sherwood, but it's a middling school, and the top Urbana school is ranked lower.

You sound dense.

because?

Also , while the city itself is walkable, where this is is not remotely close to anything to walk to - you'd have to be much further east to get anything that was walkable.

FRederick has a MARC train stop, but it's way on the other side of Frederick. So in sum, no. This is a cute house but not for you.

All of this. I haven't lived there for about 20 years but I spent my formative years in City of Frederick - I would not live there if I was AA. There are still a whole lot of racists living around there.

So NOT true anymore. You haven't lived there for 20 years.

I am not white, and three of my co-workers live in Frederick. One is Latino, one is AA and one is White. All have moved there within the last 5 years.

OP, you would be totally fine in Frederick. Honest. Don't listen to these PPs. Talk to some people in real life and ask their opinions.

I'm the Hyattsville poster, I forgot to mention the schools. I've heard many good things about the elementary school, though not so much for middle and high school. Though many are happy with the TAG schools and the Science and Tech program at Eleanor Roosevelt , if you can get in.

Alternatively, maybe consider renting. Might be able to land closer in with a better school district that way.

I really don't want to commute to DC either but this is my reality. Where else can I find a home similar to this (or even a townhome) that is in a 'walkable' area in my budget? I'm open to MD/VA and if you can find DC-great ( highly doubt it-but great )

Look at Urbana and settle for a townhouse and commute.

ASAP start looking for a job closer to home... that is what most people do.

I feel like i'd be settling 3 times. I don't want to give up my career. I love it-so that idea is out. But will check out Urbana. -OP

What kind of career only exists in DC?

Can you read? The Urbanda recommendation said it’s also a very bad commute but it was 20 minutes closer than the original post.

Yes I read that just fine. Then I read the follow up posts where you continue to shove it down OPs throat.

Not the OP, but it's so nice of you to direct that vitriol at a single mom who is literally just asking about where to raise her kid.

Anonymity really brings out the worst in people sometimes. :-/

Look in Derwood, MD; you get more for your money and it’s the last stop on the red line (Shady Grove metro).

Also, the Twinbrook area of Rockville - some less expensive but cute houses near the metro.

Ok, how about this-- I live in Frederick, and OP should not move here. The house linked has a bad school cluster. Thomas Johnson HS was recently on the news for having a Nazi flag displayed in the window. To be fair, the story is that it was part of a WW2 history class with all flags displayed, but some pranksters trashed the teacher's room when he was out and purposely left the shades up so the flag would be visible from the street, before a big event. This is the type of stuff that still happens here. Can you ignore it? Sure, but that doesn't mean it's a great place to live. There are a LOT of racists here. We moved up here from MoCo because we already lived in the northern part of the county, and we could get a much bigger home once we crossed into Fred Co. We wanted to be closer to the city, so we bought in Frederick. Our house is great. The rest of this place, not. Goal is to get back to MoCo before DS is ready for kindergarten.

I'm super glad you know one Latino and one AA person who live in Frederick, but that doesn't mean it's "so NOT true anymore" that plenty of racists still live here.

I'm the original PP who said Frederick has come a long way from Fredneck days. I'm a native Marylander (from another part of the state) and went to Hood in the 90s. It was bad then. I mean blatantly racist in town, and I am pretty damn sure Thurmont and the KKK was not just a rumor. I have friends who live there and visit a couple of times a year. OF course there are successful professional minorities there. I'm just saying, not all the old racists have died off. It's still there. It's more underground than it was, but I'd look very carefully at elected officials and police reports and the way the poor of Frederick are treated before I'd think about living there. That said, it has been changing rapidly (but there's always backlash when change comes quickly). It's a lovely town. I love visiting. But I live in DC.

This one feeds into BCC schools, I think.

Schools might not be as well regarded here, but it is in Downcounty Consortium, so there’s a choice of high schools

I love the Frederick house, but there’s nothing like it at that price with a sane commute into DC.
