Cloth napkins with kids?

New poster. We use 100% cloth napkins and have since before our kids were born. We generally change napkins 2-3 times per week. It's not often that our napkins get dipped in milk, but if one did, we'd swap it out. We definitely swap out if we eat something messy like barbecue ribs or lobster. If we're not doing laundry right away, I keep the dirty, but not too dirty napkins around to wipe up spills, etc... before they're washed.

We do too and moving to them was a great thing for our family. You don’t realize how much waste you create until you get rid of something like paper towels. We keep a bucket under the sink and put dirty napkins in the bucket along with rags. When it’s full we do a load of rags and napkins. Agree with the poster above to have a set for company since the ones we use daily are looking pretty worn. Our best ones that have held up are from pottery barn.

So switch them out more often! We don't generally get meat juice all over our napkins, but if you do, yeah makes sense to change them out more.

Wow you must be an incredibly messy eater. I hardly ever need to use a napkin to wipe my mouth unless I’m eating ribs or something. I hardly use a napkin at all. Anyways, the point of cloth napkins for a lot of people is to cut down on waste. Laundering them constantly after each use is bad for the environment, honestly it would probably be similar to using paper napkins. Our toddlers napkin gets washed very frequently because it gets pretty messy since he eats a lot with his hands and gets food on his mouth. But DH and I? Our napkins are pretty much spotless after most meals. We use cloth placemats too.

Gosh if you are this much of a germaphobe what do you do with sponges???

We have three types of towels that we use instead of paper towels with a 7 month old and 2 year old. A set of 20 pack white cleaning rags from Home Depot for cleaning counters or tables (with just water), dishes or kids hands and face if super dirty. Blue Uline towels for anything that will touch chemical or cleaning supplies or cleaning spills on the floor. Random napkins collected in adulthood for dinner napkins.

Yes, we only use cloth. I have probably 50 or so, and they just stay in a basket near the dinner table. We only use them once, and at the end of the meal they get thrown in the dirty basket in the laundry room. From there I either run a load of just napkins if it's big enough, or I throw them in with other loads.

Dump them on the couch when clean and fold and place in the dining room for next go around. There is nothing difficult about it.

For the people who say they rarely get anything on their napkins and reuse them for several days... Why even use napkins? Serious question. I’ve started setting he table with paper napkins because my DH always always gets one, but prior to this and prior to have kids I just didn’t see the need. I can wash my hands after dinner if need be... by unless I’m eating fried chicken or something I’m not touching the food with my hands anyway. And DH more often than not just uses his napkin to blow his nose right after eating and not necessarily for wiping his mouth, so I’d just as soon get rid of his napkin too.

We started using them after buying a set at a yard sale. They feel better then paper napkins and look pretty on the table. We have 40 or so now, and change them out every other day (family of three). Need to get a company set (or make some). I hated the waste of paper napkins and have loved the switch up.

We’re starting to use waxed cloth on place of disposable wrap too, it feels better to use as well. We use a mix of dish towel, rags, and paper towels for cleaning up...still working on that one.
