529 donations in lieu of wedding registry. Thoughts?

I think given their situation it's a great idea. I don't understand how it is tacky. How is it more tacky than cash? Or more stuff they don't need?

FWIW, I'm from the midwest and give money - not because I'm asked to. It is tackless to expect any kind of gift and even worse to ask for cash.
