Phones - so much $$$. Am I missing something?

DH and I have Cricket LG phones that are 50.00 bucks each. Work just fine and save us hundreds. When kids are old enough, that's what they'll have too.

Last winter they had iphone 6s for $5.00/month.

3 weeks ago, they had free iphone 6s with a plan. Those sold out in a couple of days. They were the weird colors like pink but that can be taken care of with your case.

The had free Samsung somethings last week.

I am sure it will be something else next month.

You just have to keep checking with your carrier. Something very cheap or free is always being offered.

That's a 5 year old phone. It's virtually obsolete the minute you take it out of the box, and you won't be able to run half the current apps. It's worth less than what you (didn't) spend on it.

Np: oh, please - I have an iPhone 6s and have no problem doing anything on it. I’ve had it for 2 years and no issue downloading/using/updating a myriad of apps.

Yeah, but you're just doing The Facebook, not any apps kids might like.

OP said she only wants text and talk, with no aps.

Really? Because I have an old iPhone 6s that we kept when we upgraded two years ago and even with a new battery it will be down 50% in a mere 30 minute off the charger, apps constantly crash on it, it has nearly zero memory left and gets very hot as you use it. I kept it only because we have no home phone and my then 4th grader had just started staying home alone while I ran an errand and I wanted her to be able to call me or 911 in an emergency. But the phone is pretty useless unless constantly on the charger.

There is something wrong with your phone or settings.

Both my spouse and my kid have iphone 6s and neither one of them have this issue.

I bet you have a bunch of things running behind the scenes that you don't want or use.

Anonymous wrote:If you don't have an old phone to pass down to your kids, are you spending $$$ to get them one? I started looking today and it's so much more than I expected. Even an old used iPhone is in the hundreds (unless I'm not looking in the right places?). I only want them to be able to talk and text, everything else will be locked down. But flip phones are pretty terrible for text -- I get that it would be hard since big group chats are how they all communicate. What's everyone else doing? Just spending a lot of money? Thanks

You understand they will be the weird kid that can’t iMessage or WhatsApp chat (I know this b/c I grew up with out a phone number my friends could call).

If your DD is pretty and popular, or DS is sports champ, I’m sure they can weather being outside of things and friends will jump hurdles to reach them.

But kids spontaneously plan over group messaging (not just txt b/c group txts are real flaky), and your basic phone will ostracize them. Maybe that’s your goal, and they will spend more time on SAT prep.

One compromise, get them that track phone with a mobile hot spot option, and let them tether a $200 iPod touch or simply use the family iPad with their own accounts. They maybe late to everything and get messages after things are over, but st least in conversation.

NP I seconded this poster. My dd has an android which we bought second hand has a friend who is excluded because they can't reach him and they would never think to call a home number. So, he misses out.

Just suck it up. Phones are a big deal to kids. Apparently a lot of boys have androids and they get teased relentlessly.

I get all our phones used from eBay stores that have a large number of reviews. Over the years, I've probably purchased about 15. I always have an extra one at home to replace one that, inevitably, get broken. I usually pay no more than $120 for an Android. I've never had a problem with the phones and get really good value from them.

I don't think so. DH also has an iPhone 6s and battery life has been a problem for him as well. It is a real issue.

No.
And what kind of school are you sending your kids to?

I’m betting that is a teenager posting.

Sounds like kids who need some community service opportunities as well as chores.

Family issue. Check your background programs and clean up the aps you no longer use.

Over what time period did you buy 15 phones? That seems like a HUGE number of phones. Do you have 4 or 5 kids or something? Seems like maybe you AREN'T getting good value if you're buying/replacing so many.

Anonymous wrote:Someone mentioned WhatsApp above ... can someone explain why the kids are using WhatsApp instead of texts? And I’m assuming WhatsApp is a slimy company grabbing their personal info?

Because it works for groups that are a mix of iPhones and android and is “free” on WiFi for kids who do not have unlimited plans.

I think WhatsApp was the first chat app to encrypt chats, too. Which doesn't matter for the user until someone wants to get ahold of someone's chat history

Also it's old school. They go to whatever the best cameras and screens are. It's why Google phone is blowing up in that market.

The second poster is not me, the person who originally said the 6s we kept is pretty useless. There is nothing running in the background and all that is on it appwise is whatever factory settings it came with and what’s app.
