Dh and I have phones from here:
https://tello.com/phones
we both have the moto E4+

My kid has a phone from twigby, my other kid has a phone from virgin.

There are plenty of phones out there that are just fine. We have no interest in iphones.

Went through Mint Mobile and got a very reasonable phone and plan there.

I got my sons iPhone for $100 used. Only 16gb storage, but it’ll work. Just gotta look for used stuff.

Get a Google Pixel. I still have the 1st gen & it's great. Unlimited cloud storage. It was $5/mo with Verizon and now paid off. The rest of my family has iphone & I like my phone way more, but I'm not an apple person either.

Keep your eye out for bogo deals or adding a new line free phone deals. If you can wait, there are good deals on black friday. And not the ones you wait in line for. Just check online that day for cheap phones through your carrier.

Verizon often runs crazy specials on phones.

Last winter they had iphone 6s for $5.00/month.

3 weeks ago, they had free iphone 6s with a plan. Those sold out in a couple of days. They were the weird colors like pink but that can be taken care of with your case.

The had free Samsung somethings last week.

I am sure it will be something else next month.

You just have to keep checking with your carrier. Something very cheap or free is always being offered.

Tracfone on eBay (the brand has its own store there.)

One year service (1200 mins) AND a new phone for $80-100 depending which phone you pick

Google security patches are up to vendor to push out, and they neglect old phones and shoddy manufacturers just don’t update. so if you go this route be darn sure DD doesn’t leave phone in her room while changing and is fine with every pic ever being hacked.

I think apple still supports iPhone 6 with latest iOS it’s a total different approach. One example, Chromebooks expire after 5 years. That’s it. They just say no more support for you.

I don’t think you are missing anything, Op. parents are just paying a crap ton for their kids phones. My 11 year has several friends with the iPhone X. I am not kidding.

Anonymous wrote:If you don't have an old phone to pass down to your kids, are you spending $$$ to get them one? I started looking today and it's so much more than I expected. Even an old used iPhone is in the hundreds (unless I'm not looking in the right places?). I only want them to be able to talk and text, everything else will be locked down. But flip phones are pretty terrible for text -- I get that it would be hard since big group chats are how they all communicate. What's everyone else doing? Just spending a lot of money? Thanks

Kind of makes you miss the days when AOL spam-mailed disks for $19.95 per month access, doesn't it?

My phone bill for three devices is $200. I also have a cable modem at home.

It's nuts. But essential.

That's a 5 year old phone. It's virtually obsolete the minute you take it out of the box, and you won't be able to run half the current apps. It's worth less than what you (didn't) spend on it.
