Yes they are. It’s an anonymous forum everyone lies. I make 135k after 10 years and I got really lucky |
I find the story about your friends hard to believe. I was an auditor for 7 years and always looked at payroll rates of the accounting team. Managers/controllers all over 100k unless working at some tiny, tiny nonprofits. |
Because not all CPAs or accountants become managers or controllers after 10 years of experience. |
|
I see ALOT of higher level finance jobs nationwide from my professional organization and they are typically $200K+ for CFO types and $125K-$170K for controllers or FP&A directors. Where CFOs can make big time money is working for a PE-backed firm and having a piece of the action when the company is sold.
In terms of the CPA, definitely makes a difference in pay and worth the grind of getting it done. |
True. People stay in Big 4 for 10+ years for a variety of reasons. |
|
If you are a CPA and in accounting for 10+ years and you are not a manager of some sort, then I am going to assume you are not that great at your job.,-&) Wrong. Some people are just not into management, doesn't mean they are bad accountants |
Wrong. Some people are just not into management, doesn't mean they are bad accountants +1 Many accounting works are behind the scene support kind of work. Doesn't mean you are not that great at your job. |
+1 Many accounting works are behind the scene support kind of work. Doesn't mean you are not that great at your job. Fair to a degree. But, if you are 10+ years and not in management and you are only at the staff/senior level - no, you won’t be getting 100+k because there are a lot of you. If you are going to stay an I/C you would need be an expert in whatever you are doing - technical area, I/C, etc etc. If you are a SME you won’t be at 60k, it’s because you are a bookkeeper or you haven’t moved past senior. |
| Interesting thread. Appx what amount and years of experience do the average accountants maxed out at? |
| CPA local firm, 2.5 years experience doing mainly tax work. I’m making $70,000 plus a couple thousand bonus. |
Promotion gets slower once you become a manager, and many people retire at that level unless they hit the cfo/controller/director level. I would say the salary max out around 150k at this level. |
Agree with this. Also, finance/accounting manager in a large company might encompass higher level work that a controller in a mid-market firm so titles are not the only parameter. Most accounting groups have a very flat management structure, especially these days. Max out is usually mid-30s. Then it is average raises unless you jump to something where equity is offered, and that is often very speculative. |
