Grinnell is by far the best liberal arts college that is serious about merit aid - and it can afford it because its endowment dwarfs every other school that has been mentioned in this thread. Grinnell is as good as any liberal arts college on the East Coast and the quality of its student body as competitive as any outside of the top 5 liberal arts schools in the US. It has to work a little harder to assemble that class is all, given its Iowa location.

Grinnell is a great school, but not a safety for anyone. DS with nearly identical stats as OP's DD was not admitted (but was admitted to other similarly/higher ranked SLACs). Also, though I loved Grinnell, the school didn't fully resonate with him (dumb as it sounds the flatness of the landscape put him off initially and then the school just didn't click as much as others) and that may have shaped their perception of him also. I do think Grinnell stands out in their ability/willingness to financially support strong students.

Bit of a sweeping statement. Washington and Lee does better on merit aid, if skewed toward a smaller percentage getting much bigger awards.

Washington & Lee has one of the lowest percentages of lower income students of any elite LAC and Grinnell one of the highest. And Grinnell spreads its money around to many, many more of its students. Finally, Grinnell is hands down a better school and is more aligned with OP’s preferences given the info on her post.

In addition to Centre in Kentucky, Sewanee and Rhodes in Tennessee. Lots of merit for a kids with those stats.

Less than half of enrolled students at Washington & Lee even APPLIED for financial aid. At Grinnell 75 percent did. That says a lot about who your classmates are.

Don't see any basis to say Grinnell is "hands down" better. Average scores seem a bit higher at W&L. Not the be all end all, of course, but clearly both good schools.

My kid researched many of the SLACs and shied away from W&L because of its lack of diversity - racial, ethnic and international students. Applied to Grinnell which is, of course, in a very white part of Iowa but in a way felt more like home (DC) to them.

OPs kid should consider putting it in the mix. It is a good school.

Washington & Lee is considered more of a frat boy school. The academic reputation of Grinnell is higher.

Neither one is anybody's "safety".

The New College suggestion (great suggestion) made me think of Eckerd College in St Petersburg, Florida. (That's where I live now.) It is *such* a neat college - and a gorgeous campus. I wish I'd known about it when I was applying to colleges, a thousand years ago. Living in St Pete I've met a bunch of Eckerd grads, and to a person they seem to have loved their college experience.

I realize that they’re tied in the US News rankings but that doesn’t mean much.

And you think one is better than the other. Cool worldview.

Cool. Hey don’t bother with any facts. Just say stuff and we’ll believe you.
