Girls disadvantaged?

The stereotyping of white men on here is not from someone well read or well educated. Hillbilly elegy anyone?

Not buying it. My niece is in her first year of vet school. The total number of students in her class is 114. Guess how many are men - 14, that’s right, fourteen. Do you seriously think with how competitive it is to get into vet school that not much more than 14 qualified men applied?

But they ACCEPT a lower percentage of female applicants than male applicants - for the simple reason that there are far well more qualified female applicants than there are well-qualified male applicants.

The only reason most non-tech universities have anything close to 50% men (as opposed to having women make up the large majority of enrolled students) is because most colleges now provide affirmative action in admissions.... for white boys.

I would be just fine with my daughters attending colleges that are 70% female. Men apparently got along just fine for most of the last few centuries at colleges with few or no women. I say: if the boys can't make the grades, tough luck for them. We already live in a world that disadvantages women in a thousand large and small ways. Suck it it, guys.

I just wish college admissions offices felt the same.

And you know the true reason they don't? Hint: it's not because they think gender balance is inherently good. It's because they know that men still out-earn women, and they are scared that with fewer male alums, they will have fewer rich alums to endow the new football stadium.

Truth.

You know many, many women don't share this view of what it's like to be a female, right?

Awesome! Do you want to tell your daughter that she needs to get better grades than her brother to get into the same college? And a higher SAT score too.

This, unfortunately, is EXACTLY what you need to tell your daughter. You need to say, “sweetheart, even though in almost every other way your brother will have advantages in life that you will not have, when it comes to college admissions at the average college, not to mention graduate school admissions outside of a small number of stem fields, you will have to have higher test scores, higher grades and better recommendations than your brother will need to be excepted into programs of the same quality. Sorry, hon. Next time, try to be born male!”

Different schools have different gender balances but most favor girls by 1 or more percentage points. So if the acceptance rates appear lower, it's because they are applying in higher numbers. You can select schools and programs that favor girls in acceptance rates, so there's really no reason to cry victim here.

it's easier to get into t14 law schools as a woman. men score higher on the lsat.

i'm sure more women graduate from ttt's but no one cares about ttt's.

New research indicates that female law students are clustered in lower-ranked schools

his disadvantages women, who have lower LSAT scores (on average) than men.”

Women score an average of two points lower than men on the LSAT, which is still the key admissions number.

Do you want to tell your son that he needs to get better grades than his sister to get into the same college and even then he will not get as much merit aid as she does? It is the same on the other side for different schools.

In our science and math family, it is girls who are advantaged.

So hypocritical how many approve wholeheartedly of holistic admissions that benefit certain groups (including for women in STEM) but are criticizing colleges for using it to get more gender balance in their classes.

Old news OP. Where the heck have you been?

Seriously?! That's what you tell your daughter? No wonder millennials are so messed up and unable to cope with the unfairness of life.
