Girls disadvantaged?

Because they are soft

Seriously. The stats don’t lie.

No, people, you have hold of the wrong end of the stick. Yes, most liberal arts colleges ENROLL more than 50% women. But they ACCEPT a lower percentage of female applicants than male applicants - for the simple reason that there are far well more qualified female applicants than there are well-qualified male applicants.

The only reason most non-tech universities have anything close to 50% men (as opposed to having women make up the large majority of enrolled students) is because most colleges now provide affirmative action in admissions.... for white boys.

I would be just fine with my daughters attending colleges that are 70% female. Men apparently got along just fine for most of the last few centuries at colleges with few or no women. I say: if the boys can't make the grades, tough luck for them. We already live in a world that disadvantages women in a thousand large and small ways. Suck it it, guys.

I just wish college admissions offices felt the same.

And you know the true reason they don't? Hint: it's not because they think gender balance is inherently good. It's because they know that men still out-earn women, and they are scared that with fewer male alums, they will have fewer rich alums to endow the new football stadium.

Truth.

IMHO, this issue is just begging for litigation. A quota for women....

Or early education system is more favorable to white women. Looking at the numbers, Asian women are discriminated against in favor of white women.

My DD wants a college educated woman as a potential future wife. Preferably one without crushing student loan debt. I don’t think she cares if there are enough 18 year old boys for a truly competitive Fall Rush.

The acceptance rate is lower simply because there are more female applicants, not because girls are better applicants.

Female applicants get an edge at Wharton

Ridiculous. Colleges are begging for women in STEM fields. They get a preference because there are so few applicants. On the other hand, colleges have a surfeit of female applicants n the soft stuff, i.e. social sciences etc. The OP is just factually incorrect.

As the parent of two daughters, this kills me.

$%@$#*&!

On a more practical note, any suggestions about how to overcome this for female applicants who are not in STEM fields?

The same way boys have to overcome it in STEM fields.
