If you are under 40, have you ever seen The Godfather?

I'm 50 something and remember seeing the first movie when it came out with my Italian parents; there was a line around the block to get into the movie theater. Yes Parts I and II are classics.

And my goodness - Al Pacino and Robert Di Niro were so hot. James Caan wasn't bad either.

To the pp who mentioned John Cazale - he was amazing and he was Meryl Streep's boyfriend when he died. He was also incredible in The Deer Hunter, which my 50-something friends here will also remember well. Another incredible movie with a great cast.

Part III gets no respect - but I did love Andy Garcia as Lucy Mancini's son with Sonny. A few years ago when I was in Sicily, I had to make a pilgrimage to the steps of the Opera House in Palermo.

39- No, I have not seen it. I read one of the books though, but I don't remember the details at all.

A) if godfather I and II are on every list of best movies of all time, you should see them. Even if you aren’t Italian or from the NY area (of which I am both and of course I’ve seen both a million times).

B) re: Cazale - if you haven’t seen Dog Day Afternoon or Deer Hunter, you are not a film fan. Ditto Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, for that matter. Spend a weekend watching good, quality filmmaking. Those were some truly magical years.

I’ve never seen the movie, but I know it’s about a magic family. That’s pretty much it.

People- you have your marching orders. Go lock yourselves in a room and watch I and II. III can be skipped.

I’m a II person.

We are Jewish and are going to be honorary godparents for our friends’ daughter. DH now wants to be called “Godfather” and have his knuckles kissed by all.

38 and bits and pieces, but I’ve never watched any of them straight through.

I’m 38 and I’ve seen it several times. The Godfather Saga is interesting because it puts it in chronological order. DH is 42 and loves the movies.

I’ve only really half-watched III, when it’s on AMC or whatever and I’m doing some household chore.

Ha! No, of course not.

I also haven’t seen Gone with the Wind or Charlie Chaplin movies. I recognize these names (and basic plots) as historical cultural references.

Why? It's not Animal House.
