For me at least, I appreciate that my kids go to a diverse school where they learn about people who are different than they are and feel empathy and compassion for others. Imagine going to a school like Churchill with all the bullying and racism. |
| Thing is, once the kids are older they see patterns - patterns of work ethic, scores, truancy, getting in trouble - and draw their own judgments. |

The following link gives PARCC Assessment Performance Results Summary - 2017 for Walt Whitman High School.
https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/uploadedFiles/schools/whitmanhs/about/427_Progress_Report_Card_ENG_WHITMAN_HS_2017.pdf 505 students appeared for the test 10th Grade English/Language Arts and of them, a total of 90.9% students either met or exceeded expectations. Only 185 students appeared for Algebra I test (because many students would have done this course long before they reached 10th grade). Of these students, over 62.2% either met or exceeded expectations. From the English/Language Arts test results above, one can say that Whitman students are learning and doing well in that subject. |
| Whitman is just a terrible school. That’s it. So whatever you do, please don’t move to Bethesda and send your children there. You wouldn’t want them to get low English scores, too. |
Exactly. Because the only school with bullying and racism is Churchill with all the complicit white people. |
The below results are from 2018. Based on these numbers, ELA at Whitman is not looking good.
"Average ELA score result: 2.5 Earned points: 3.7 out of 7.5 Percent Proficient English Language Arts 25.7% Earned points 1.9 out of 7.5 http://reportcard.msde.maryland.gov/Graphs/#/ReportCards/ReportCardSchool/3/17/6/15/0427/ |
True dat! Send them to Kennedy High instead. |
So they only will put effort into something that will get them into a good college and not because they should try do their best in academics? That doesn't sound like elite univ. material. Why do other W students do well in PARCC then? Are they just "dumber"? Or less entitled and reliant on parents' money? |
Because, obviously, Whitman students are not very smart. You nailed it pp. Whitman students are subpar. |
If your job required you to perform a menial task, and that task had no impact on your salary or future prospects, how much effort would you put into that task? Your absolute most effort, just enough to get by, or none at all? |
I can understand not working on it. In that case, we should see many 0s. Once you decide to site in the exam, it might take more effort strategically calculating “just enough to get by” than completing everything that I am able to work out. |
| A lot of excuses being made but truth is Whitman isn’t the same school it was 20 years ago. Things are always changing. |
So again.. do Whitman students only do things that will get them into a good college? That's not very "elite" college material. Why do other W students do well, then? Are they just more conscientious about doing well regardless of what they get in return? Or they are just dumb because they don't realize that it has no impact on college admissions, and so why bother trying? I don't know about you, but I tell my non W kids to do their best in whatever they do. It's a life attitude I'm trying to teach them. But then again, we are not from money, so they can't rely on their parents' money. |

Because the 2.0 Guinea pigs are now in high school and they were never taught grammar. Additionally, 2.0 monkeyed around with spelling.
When my 2.0 Guinea pig was in 5th grade, the teachers realized that none of the kids could write the most basic 3-5 paragraph essay using the standard rubric. They discovered our school was not alone. The solution was to focus on writing using old fashioned methods. The basically abandoned social studies and science to get the kids caught up. Mcps is awful. Even the W schools and their feeder schools. They're merely less awful, but still awful. |
