Quick answer: MCPS is funded at the COUNTY level, not Township.

Because this is not New Jersey, where townships are a main unit of local government, but rather Maryland, where counties are the main unit of local government.

That does not preclude having different school closing policies and scheduled for different areas of the school district. Try again.

That does not mean there couldn't be two, or more, subdistricts in MCPS, with (as needed) different closings.

How about special ed programs/immersion/magnet programs that move kids from one area to another? Teachers that work at multiple schools. Sporting events

Are you seriously telling me that those are insurmountable challenges? Come on.

My child is in a special program out of his own cluster and honestly it wouldn’t be hard or terribly expensive to recreate it in another school if MCPS subdivised. What costs MCPS the most money is building brand new schools and staffing them with new worforce - that’s several tens of million for each new (empty) building. The truth is that a lot of special programs are ALREADY offered for upcounty and downcounty, so they are not what’s holding anyone back! I agree it’s just a lack of political will power because people only clamor for this on snow days.

Like extending the school year for a shorter summer brain drain and longer more restful breaks besides summer... research has shown it would be in the students’ best interest, but there’s just inertia and apathy.

Do you seriously think the school board has not discussed/tried to make something work for years? There are too many inter county programs even to split the county in half. It is enormous. Fairfax in Va has the same problem. Go to a school board meeting and voice your opinion if you want answers or a change.

That’s the BS excuse that people give for not being able to figure out how to care for their own children on the one or two days when maybe one half could
