This was my Dd, too, and she told her story in a convincing way, backed up by consistency in her ECs and volunteer efforts. Everyone dumps on service trips as too cliche—we’ll, she did 5 of them she loved them so much. And she got in to 7 of the 8 colleges she applied to. If the interest is authentic, it will come through. |
Any luck with Ivies if dance as your child's main non-academic EC? If yes, any tips? Do you have to place top 12 in YAGP, or is it enough to be good, love it, win some a couple of regional events?
Please assume strong academics, STEM focus, and no other hooks. |
Try again in English? Your post makes absolutely no sense. |
DD in at Cornell: good local private, legacy, class president, varsity team captain, 33 ACT and 4.0 Weighted GPA. |
On the topic of athletes at ivies, this is the key point: "There are far more bright, well rounded kids with perfect stats than there are smart kids who have extraordinary talents, including athletic ones." |
That’s because they only take athletes. Have your kid pick up a stick or kick a ball or something. |
That’s fabulous! Her hard work paid off. Congratulations!! |
I'm not sure why you find this frustrating. The Ivies (not Ivy's, btw) recognize that, generally speaking, it is much more difficult and takes much more dedication/hard work to become an elite athlete than to be "well rounded." I can also guarantee you that recruited athletes at Ivies are "bright," just like your DS. I would think (as many others, I'm sure) that Ivies would rather have a student who was able to become an elite athlete while also succeeding in school than a student who may have had slightly better stats with run-of-the mill ECs. Honestly, I think this is a no brainer. |
+1 Very well said, PP. |
U would be surprised how many athletes at Ivies are not that bright....same w donor $$$ kids |
Really depends on the sport. For the helmet sports, yes the stats are below average. For the other sports there is really not that much difference. |
HYP grad here. The top schools stay a few steps ahead but you’d be surprised at how many kids without ultra-rare talents figure out the formula and make it in. |
She did, i swear to god. And I'm not sure why you can't comprehend this |
ED is where all colleges, including the Ivy’s, take a majority of their recruited athletes. Should not be a surprise that strong athletes are well represented at this juncture. |
Or from above. I can see from DDs accepted student page that everyone who was accepted early has "something" Athletes, musicians and test kids of billionaires. I won't name the Billionaire's dd but he is one of the people who supported "the Giving Pledge." |
