Except...he wasn’t white. |
And then there are the evangelicals... |
| He wasn't a missionary. He was an Instagram adventurer. Big difference. |
They generally understand that it’s morally reprehensible to invade primitive societies in order to prosthelytize. They’re at least that smart. |
| How did he think he will spread the gospel when he does not even know the language of the islanders? SMH |
Nope, he was a missionary who was also using Instagram to record everything that he was doing to spread the gospel, and thought that this was a good idea. Sometimes people are very misguided about what is a good vs bad idea.

OMG what a total nutcase.
Why is it so hard for some religious people to understand that most people don't need or want their brainwashing. And now he's contaminated their community with his germs. Oh the irony that if there's such a thing as heaven and hell then he's surely going to the latter... |
| OP again. My question is what kind of training do missionaries actually receive? Do they have training to have respect for other cultures? |
these posts are sick and disturbing. The man wasn't a colonizer. He seems to have been mentally unwell. He was wrong to do what he did. He's dead now. Hopefully, the tribe won't experience any negative ramifications. |
There isn’t a single training program because lots of religions have missionaries and some even have different types of missionaries. The Mormon ones have lots of training, including language lessons. The people from my coworker’s fundy church who go into SE on Fri nights not so much. My cousin who is a Catholic missionary only does medical aid and “preaches the Gospel by example”. |
It sounds like he was a self appointed missionary and not affiliated with an organization. I think he just decided he wanted to go to these islands. He had been reading up on them and decided he wanted to go there. It isn't clear or he was mentally unwell or just very fixated on these people and somehow thought it would be different. If he had been with a mission organization, they do a lot of training and would never support something like this. |
x 1 million |
He was only “unwell” in the sense that religious fanatics are “unwell”. |
mentally "ill"? |
| At least he died doing something he believed in. Not a bad way to go. |
